Hammond is crap. Live in Madisonville and drive 25 minutes.
Why?
I would suggest buying in Ponchatoula. It is quite nice, it is near Hammond, and you won’t have the taxes of St. Tammany.

Well, it’s not the worst place to be in South LA. You’re close to BR & Nola. Easy access to great fishing and decent hunting. Their downtown ain’t bad. They have a target. Easy to hop on I-12 to Florida or 55 north to MS.
There are some ratchets. As with almost everywhere in LA. I would prefer Ponchatoula or Mandeville but Hammond proper isn’t bad. You could do worse. Worse as in North LA or Houma.

Moved to Hammond last summer. Have lived in Ascension Parish, Jefferson Parish and now Tangipahoa. So far, we've enjoyed it. Quiet, but with good selection of restaurants and bars. Close enough to NOLA and tremendous fishing all around SE Louisiana.

Hammond area has really come up, everything you could want is in Hammond. Any type of food, decent bar life, close to water, right in between NOLA and BR. Area around SLU is very nice, don't believe all the negativity about this area.

Could be a lot worse places to live in LA
At least in Hammond, you are close to BR, Northshore and New Orleans to make pretty quick trips when you need to.
Hammond has some underrated food places as well.

Commute from Baton Rouge or Covington. Seriously.

Listen here baw. Don’t listen to these fools, Hammond is great. Crescent has the best Miller draft in the world, tell Mr Ricky I said hi. Try out all the other restaurants and bars listed. College always has something going on with sport events. 30 min to BR, 25 min to northshore, 50 min to NOLA. Best part is you don’t have to deal with the terrible congestion of all those other places.

I recommend Jim and Dave's Kickin' Chicken and a bowl of crab & Artichoke at Mariner's Inn across the street.
