A Michigan police department is apologizing for failing to help a mother who accidentally locked her baby in a hot car. Lacey Guyton's 2-month-old daughter got trapped during a visit to her grandmother's home last Saturday. As Guyton tried to get inside, the grandmother called 911 twice. But the dispatcher refused to send help, saying the police and fire departments don't unlock vehicles.
quote:
Guyton tried and failed to smash the car's front passenger window with a piece of asphalt. Her grandmother called 911 but she said the dispatcher said the department does not send emergency crews to unlock cars and offered to send a tow company instead.
"So she's screaming and crying, which is making her hotter, and I'm still trying to break the window," Guyton said.

After 10 to 12 minutes, Guyton smashed the back windshield with her grandfather's window breaker, climbed in, and got Raina out on her own. She said Raina was screaming and drenched in sweat.
quote:
According to Waterford police, the dispatcher involved has not been back to work since the incident and will face disciplinary action. The chief said there will be additional training so dispatchers know how to handle these calls in the future.

Grandmother: My granddaughter just put her baby in the car and the car door locked and we can't get in it.
911 dispatcher: We don’t unlock vehicles, unfortunately.

Back in my day there were stories of moms who lifted a vehicle to rescue her kids from danger.
These millennial moms can't even break glass to save their child?

She did this before EMS would have arrived, most likely.
People are too quick to call 911. Break the fricking window. Be a goddamn parent.

Still got her out faster then an officer getting there. Shouldnt have been a call at all. Break the window, and get the job done. Replace window. Move on. Non-story.
They probably didnt want to break it to not have to replace it at their own cost.

The child got sweaty? The horror of it all
I don't know the temperature there but in South la, you would start getting into some dangerous temps for a small child in that time frame. Add in crying and freaking out.

Sounds like she was trying and the grandmother was the one that called as she was trying. No harm in calling, what the dispatcher did is bullshite.

It's two women and car windows are a lot harder to break than most people think.
Not sure why this woman is gettin crucified. At least she didn't lock the kid in and go shopping.

bitch couldn't unlock her lock from a cell phone app?
And more importantly, how do you "accidentally" lock your child in the car? For real.

I posted this thinking people would be bashing the 911 operator. I really wasn't expecting the bashing of the mother.

Did you not read the story? She was trying to break the window and was unsuccessful. had she not gained access to a window breaker, it sounds like the kid may have ended up not making it.
The 911 dispatch should have been more helpful. This chick clearly wasn't up to the task. This situation would fall under my definition of an emergency. It was handles portly by emergency services.

I guess I just have a problem with her immediately running to the media and complaining when she resolved the issue herself before EMS would have arrived anyways, most likely.
It's a non story. She should be proud that she handled it herself.

The mother fricked up. But she also fixed it. The dispatcher should be fired for that, but did the grandmother call and ask to have the police come and unlock the vehicle or call and ask for a cop to come break the window? There are still a lot of questions here

You best believe if 911 refuses to send help when I call for something legitimate that I will blast them everywhere.

Don't firefighters have tools designed to break car windows?
Absolutely nothing wrong with calling 911 for this. Even if the mother can get the kid out, ems can help with heat stroke care/assessment. fricking retards on this board.
