Was reading the Jamaica violence thread, that got me thinking about south of the border... how is it nowadays? Are the cartels still running things? Anyone been down their in the past decade (not talking a resort)?

Outside of the Cancun area Mexico is a dangerous place. Gangs ruined the former tourism mecca in Acapulco. No one goes there any more.

TODAY:

Three U.S. siblings found dead in Mexico in 2014 were executed by Mexican marines and a border mayor's paramilitary security team, the country's National Human Rights Commission said Thursday.
Erica Alvarado Salinas, 26, Alex Alvarado, 22, and Jose Angel Alvarado, 21, all American citizens, disappeared in 2014 while visiting their father in El Control, a small town near Matamoros, a Mexican city in the dangerous state of Tamaulipas, across the border from Brownsville, Texas.

According to the commission's report, witnesses said the four victims were forced into a vehicle belonging to the security detail of then-Matamoros Mayor Leticia Salazar Vázquez. Human rights investigators were also able to interview several men who reported being arrested the same day the American siblings disappeared. Many of them said they saw the group taken to an empty lot to be beaten and interrogated by the marines.

With 25,339 murders in 2017, Mexico suffers record homicide tally

Investigators opened 25,339 murder probes last year, up nearly 25 percent from the 2016 tally, interior ministry data released on Saturday showed. It was the highest annual total since the government began counting murders in 1997.

Been to Torreón numerous times for business. Was just there last week. Big cartel area but there are large American companies there like John Deere, Caterpillar and a few others.

You can google it and see it used to be pretty dangerous.

PS Mexico in general is much safer and better than most people think (or are hellbent on thinking). It gets a weirdly disproportional bad rap.

Mexico City is one of my favorite cities ever and is a must-see for anyone IMO.

We have 3 H2A guys that come in every year. Two of them live in the middle of nowhere and they don’t have any problems. The other is a cab driver in Tampico when he’s not here. There’s a language barrier, but from what I can gather, he sees some wild shite on a daily basis that’s cartel related.

Majority of the killings and violence are cartel on cartel and if you are careful you are generally safe in Mexico. Half the people saying how unsafe it is have never been to Mexico outside of the resort areas.

I can't help but be in awe at the sheer size of it when flying into Mexico City. Unreal.
