Federal and state authorities in Mexico have disarmed the entire police force in the city of Acapulco as investigators look into suspicions that it has been infiltrated by drug gangs.
According to The Associated Press, officers "were stripped of their guns, radios and bullet-proof vests and taken for background checks. Law enforcement duties in the seaside city of 800,000 will be taken over by soldiers, marines and state police."
The dramatic step was taken "because of suspicion that the force had probably been infiltrated by criminal groups" and due to "the complete inaction of the municipal police in fighting the crime wave," the state government said.

I've always found it freaky that being a federal police officer in Mexico is so dangerous that you routinely have to wear a ski mask when out in the field.

It only took them 40 years to catch on. Nothing gets by the Mexican government.

Mexican Marines are the only uncorrupted entity in Mexico. They're the ones who do the heavy lifting in the narco war.

Also convenient for dealing with the cartels. Makes it harder to point out dirty cops.

There are only two types of cops in Mexico. Dirty cops and dead cops.

Ya, pretty big difference.
Although, its only a matter of time until its disbanded.

It is in Mexico. If you disarm them, then you disband them in probably every practical sense. My question is how do we know the agencies who shut down Acapulco PD isn’t playing that hand for the cartels as well? Are the feds really trying to turn a corner, or is it the same old story.

What makes them think the Federales wont do the same thing? Their reputation isn't exactly above reproach.

My understanding is the Mexican Marines are the pointmen on this and they are generally considered to be the only unit not completely compromised by cartels and kingpins.

Time to call in the members of Acapulco HEAT

The local cops and their families live, work, and go to school in areas controlled by the cartels.
Federales are brought in from other areas of the country. It’s much harder to intimidate them.

No.
Words still have meanings in 2018.

I've always assumed that they let most things slide, but get in a couple busts a year to keep the drug war money coming in. Same with all other Central and South American countries. None of them really want to shut down drug money for their country, and they sure as shite don't want to go to war with the cartels

I was thinking how funny it would be is the corrupt feds shut down a non-corrupt police force, then got praised for it.

Which is weird.
Youd think with all that money they could upgrade their housing and living conditions, yet the only ones doing it are the cartel leaders. The normal people surely arent benefiting from any of it.

Drug gangs have infiltrated almost all levels of government and law-enforcement.
If you are tourist, stay out of their way and they will stay out of yours. Plain and simple
