To my delight, an archive of AOL message board posts during Spurrier's Reign of Terror (only Gator fans seem to like that phrase) has been preserved. I had the originals until around 2015, but they were always digital, and can never be lost.

If you want to kill some time, look at SEC Football as I did in 1996.

This seems still relevant to today just change the name and a few details

quote:

Would you want to go to Auburn right now? We have one of the top programs in the SEC and yet some fans constantly deride our coach.... Terry Bowden has a better winning percentage than any coach in Auburn history but even that's no longer good enough. He leads Auburn to an undefeated season for the first time in 36 years but now some fans will accept nothing less. Do you think the high school recruits can't pick up on this????

8. Kirk Herbstreit is a breath of fresh air. I was worried that Corso would go unchecked once Craig James left ESPN. However, Herbstreit is a classy and astute observer. He has shown no midwest bias, which I expected from a former Buckeye QB. Is Corso unchecked? Not so fast, my friend.

Part of some serious poster's weekly breakdown ... 1996

A bit tedious to look through this on a phone, but I am interested.

Here’s a forum discussion from the morning of 9/11. I’m sure you could find others if you searched hard enough

Looking back at history is indeed tedious, the reason it is often ignored.

That is a great 911 thread. That morning is etched in my memory.

Thanks for posting that.

I came here to post this:

but bowl already beat me to it. It’s amazing how our fans haven’t changed at all in the last 30 years.

Very interesting read. It documents what everyone thought when the first plane hit (just an accident) to the second plane hitting and everyone knew something bad was going on.

A lot more civil in those days.

Also, I was sure to click the week of the 1996 Tennessee at Memphis upset (9 Nov 1996).

I've lived in Tally since 89, IRL I knew folks in the TGRRT like GrayGator and RepMarty.

Their militant thoughts always bothered me. The 97 rhetoric you read was just the beginning of a war here in Tally.

Once Spurrier and then Bowden left, it calmed down.

That said, #1vs#2 at Doak for this Tally Gator would be fine, one more time, cause that was fun.

and i saw several sec versions.... "the paper chase" (story of police pursuit
of law text book thieves), "12 angry teams" (angry at the ncaa for picking on
member schools for violations), "blown away" (highlight film of fiasco bowl
humiliation), "burden of proof" (conference schools trying to prove to the
ncaa they ain't cheatin), "back to the future" (based on inclination of all
gator fans to lean on ancient history to prove they are the better team the
past decade), "leaving las vegas" (story of gator fans hitchhiking home from
the desert after losing home, car etc. on a "sure thing" bet on a gator
victory over nu- "we can't be beaten, cause we're the gators" now THAT'S
compelling logic), "house party" (chronicles a friendship gone bad when
teammates break stuff over each others head at a pre sugar bowl buffet), and
finally, "the rise and fall of the third reich" (saga of the life and times
of an insane, ego maniac a.k.a. "the steve spurrier story") enjoy!
LMAO. We need to introduce this guy to the MSB

Might as well ask Walter White to cook again.

That was likely Riviat that you quoted, hard core Bama but also objective...

Could you be specific? I'm genuinely curious. Tracking how language becomes offensive is fascinating.

I was primarily lurking in those days as well.

But in all of those posts, my lz2112 persona does make an appearance.
