Merriam-Webster said lookups for the word “gaslighting” on its website increased 1,740% in 2022

It means downright deceitful. Manipulating. Misleading. Merriam-Webster has named its word of 2022 - "gaslighting."

The official definition for "gaslighting," according to Merriam-Webster, is the psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time, that "causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, uncertainty of one’s emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator."

Last year, Merriam-Webster named "vaccine" as its word of the year.

"Pandemic" was Merriam-Webster's word of the year in 2020.

2020 "Pandemic", 2021 "vaccine". In summary, 2022, "gaslighting".

2023, "atonement"? We can hope.

Gaslighting comes from the Patrick Hamilton play Gaslight. It was later made into a movie with Ingrid Bergman of the same name. Actually an excellent movie.

this is neither here nor there, but every article or advice piece i've ever read on "gaslighting" as it pertains to a marriage leaves me even more confused over whether it's my wife gaslighting me, me gaslighting my wife, or both of us gaslighting eachother, and then i stare at the wall wondering if i remember anything about my twelve year marriage correctly.

Most articles written for women are bullshite.

Telling you a trans woman is a woman is gaslighting. Its using obvious lies to make you believe you're the crazy one.

True. It is no longer simply a mistake or a white lie, it is gaslighting.

Telling normies about psych terms has to be up there with the advent of social media as society's biggest mistakes imo.
