Louisiana would eliminate mental health services for people with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder and other serious illnesses after July 1 under the state budget proposal put forward by the House of Representatives.

Louisiana Department of Health Secretary Rebekah Gee said she would have to cut most mental health services currently provided to people on Medicaid, including children, in order to deal with a proposed $235 million state funding cut to her agency for the annual budget cycle the starts in July.

One of the only mental health treatment options for people on Medicaid she would be able to keep would be inpatient beds at hospitals that provide services to the poor and uninsured. Many outpatient services -- for both adults and children -- would be eliminated however, Gee said, unless the Senate and Gov. John Bel Edwards get the House to agree to restore of some the agency's funding over the next two weeks.

Hopefully, this is just a power play by DHH

Louisiana gonna Louisiana

Good. No need to waste hundreds of millions of dollars on the least valuable members of society.

Yeah I'm not going to say I know much about this but I will say mental health is an issue in the Nola area and it has started to finally get better after Katrina but it doesn't need a pull back now.

Maybe efficient or whatever needs to be better but care needs to be at the same level or even increased.

I can be down with this... if we can keep that chunk of money from the Feds for snap and just go back to handing out commodities and take the rest and throw it at mental health... I'm all for that

What's the reason why health and education are the only things we can cut in the budget?

Chicagondid this. Now the insane homeless wander the streets being dregs to society, committing crimes and lowering standards of decency.

I'd like to think everyone would want to help everyone who may be in need, but if the state's budgets just can't afford it, then that is just that.

Cute response, but i work in mental health for mississippi. And we just got cut multi millions AGAIN, year after year. Our 2-3yr outlook is bleak, and if they end up shutting the doors i have no clue where these sick patients will go. Its scary

She can't find money in her $20+ million executive office budget to cut?

You might know better than me, but does $11 million to development and implementation of a provider management system and a call center sound about right?
