Depression and anxiety suck, I’ve had to leave work because of them, I just say I have a headache though

Kind of hard to talk about if you haven’t heard of it.

Let me put it into terms that you can relate to - you know all those days you or your buddies take off to get away from society & go hunting & fishing? It's the same concept

It’s a recent corporate invention, and I suspect it’s mostly used to sleep off hangovers.

What is it about the concept that you question?

Definitely use them. I'm in a highly cognitive, high stress fast paced field and do get fatigued from time to time mentally.

That's definitely how I would use it, but there are a lot of fragile (and I don't mean this in a completely negative and derogatory sense) folks who benefit from having some time off for mental health. Better to have them take a break than to have a breakdown at work.

What, I should be punished for never getting sick? frick that, I'm taking a few "mental health" days throughout the year.

If you have a job that challenges you, you understand what these are for. You can 100% become mentally fatigued.

Plant operators don't need to take a day for mental recharge.
