It's understood that you love her. You're married to her.
People who get tattoos are trashy. And yes, I think the same thing about them.
A ring isn't the same. It's a custom. It's an understood ritual as part of the marriage.
Outward displays don't correspond to the degree of love you have for your spouse. If you thought it did and you really loved your wife, you'd get her name tattooed on your forehead.
