If he is using a public restroom and touching the surfaces there, how does he know that another person that also used that same restroom didn’t just have a bunch of diarrhea a few hours ago from the norovirus he has.
Now that norovirus he has touched and had in his fingers and phone and now in his mouth since he never washes his hands. And now he is sick.
Norovirus is hard to get rid of. It can live on hard surfaces for weeks. And only a tiny bit of the virus is needed to make you sick. Regular cleaners don’t kill the virus either. Gotta use bleach.

He would still get it from opening the door to leave after he washed his hands.

My point is that if you don’t wash your hands before you eat....your are ingesting anything you may have touched.
If you aren’t cleaning your phone on a regular basis and don’t wash your hands before you eat...you are ingesting the germs that are on your phone. Studies have shown that most people’s phones have 10 times more germs than most toilet seats.

Washing your hands doesn’t kill bacteria/viruses. It mechanically removes it from your hands if done correctly.
Bleach is for killing the virus from surfaces.

My boundary on this is that I recommend people wash their hands after miscellaneous defecation, urinating, etc. Beyond that, I don't keep tabs on who does and doesn't practice their due hygiene diligence and it's really just as much of a sad reflection on those who over-scrutinize other peoples' personal issues.

If you are old and southern the answer is probably yes. We were expected to put pizza on a plate and not eat it from a box. The old man ate at all kinds of greasy spoons in his working career but would not eat at McDonald's because they did not have silverware.

On a related note, why do people use their phone in the bathroom? Seems this is popular with the younger set but totally inappropriate on so many levels. Aside from the health and poor manners, wait till you get older and that excessive time leads to prolapsed hemorrhoids. Nothing like the Doc cutting your arse open to drain those things.
