Oh this thread has been full of it. What started in all likelihood as a tragic accident has spiraled into a racially-charged debate between those with sympathy and those without.
Black? Check.
Criminal history? Check.
Overweight? Check.
Kids? Check.
Potential lawsuit? Check.
Throw in an animal being killed AND that animal being a gorilla and this is like fricking Christmas for the sick fricks of the OT.

I think we can look at this whole thing objectively if we make the same situation occur in different location with he same sort of interactions between patrons and assets.
I'm talking water parks, amusement parks, aquaria.
What do they do there?
If a kid climbs and gets stuck in the scaffolding of a ride and they shut down the ride and disassemble the ride to get him out, does the park charge the parents for the amount of time the ride is down and for the cost of deconstruction and rebuilding?
Or is the park at fault for allowing that area to be as easily accessible?
Want to hear something a little more closer to home, if you went to Canada and went to these types of attractions you would see far fewer signs of safety and you could go and touch way more things there than in USA...because people assume responsibility for their own safety.
Unlike in USA where there is blame on everyone except you.

WTF does that have to do with a 4 year old kid being in grave danger from an ape?
Ummm, everything. The kid wouldn't have been there in the first place if he had parents worth half a shite.

It is entirely plausible that both parties are at fault and that is that. The parent's should have paid more attention and the zoo shouldn't have such accessibility available to 4 year olds. The kid only had minor injuries and the gorilla was killed. Given the events that led up to it, that is the best case scenario for the zoo and the parents and each should go on about their business IMO.
However, for those that think the zoo is absolved from any culpability because the parents may have been negligent, you're wrong, at least from a legal standpoint.

Right. Because surely the gorilla wouldn't grab the child. The gorilla surely wouldn't flip out when the child tried to run.

I tend to lean that it's a freak accident. At the Houston zoo, if you're determined enough you can find yourself in an exhibit. This zoo went 38 yrs without incident.
I fault the parents WAY more than I fault the zoo. But also, the zoo perhaps should have had more staff or better protection around that exhibit. still, for a 4 year old to be able to climb 2 barriers the parents were definitely distracted for more than a split second. I dont' know the situation, so I will withhold judgment, but I'd definitely be interested in seeing security footage of where their attentions were as the kid climbed down.

In what respect was she a bad parent? Should you have your kids on a leash everywhere you go?
Actually yes. This is the exact problem in New Orleans. Parents are not held responsible for their children's actions. Parents should pay attention to what their little shits are doing. If you aren't responsible enough to monitor them and make sure they aren't climbing over barriers to get inside a animal enclosure, you shouldn't have kids and should be sterilized.
