Seems like this occupation is brought up a lot on here so I thought I'd post an article from Medreps:

Not really.

And med device is much more lucrative than pharma on average.

How'd you end up getting into this Okie? Is there some kind of special degree/skills/certification requirement or is mostly just sales and a "personality" fit?

It's amazing how many of them I have worked with have addictive personalities. No doubt that personality type gravitates towards sales.

That hasn't been my experience. More just high energy people who are financially driven.

The average salary for a Pharmaceuticals Sales Representative is $68,173. Salaries estimates based on 39 salaries submitted anonymously to Glassdoor by Pharmaceuticals Sales Representative employees in Louisiana.May 4, 2017

Total salary or base? Pharma usually tops out around 100-120k I think.

Most seem to live life to the fullest, be it gambling, drinking, drugs, risky behavior in general. The typical person does not seek out this field for safety and security in the workforce. They are driven to be a sales leader and know the volatility of the profession.

Male or Female you need to be attractive. And you need tailored scrubs for equipment rep.

A male Pharm Sales rep is something I have not seen in years. There is just no need for them I guess. They just need to be hot women.

Put a pair of tits in a Middle Eastern MDs face and they are a 13 year old boy.

Is that still the case after the past few years? The feds have been making huge cuts to medical equipment and a lot of suppliers have gone out of business. If you don't have buyers for your products you can't make much as a rep.

It's a give/take relationship. They sell, we provide the cardiac cath at 42 from all the added stress and partying that caused the MI.

It really helps to know someone in the industry particularly if there's an opening with that company.

I personally cold-called Med. Device company's HR numbers if I saw there was an opening. Did for this like 6 months until finally got an interview and landed my first gig.

I have a degree in marketing. You'll go through so much training that it really doesn't matter what your background is but I would suspect someone with biology (I.E. knows anatomy well) would have an easier time breaking in.

I've seen this. shite like Going on the wrong floor or staying longer in an area than permitted. Very weird arse restrictions by facilities and admins can get reps blacklisted from facilities and subsequently fired.

Even my MD wife agrees with this.
