I've been in device, pharma, and services. Now I'm in long term care. I've had success in all facets of medical sales. I'm trying to get my gf into it now but not having any luck since she doesn't have sales experience. She'd kill it and then probably leave me, but hey, it's a chance worth taking.

Can she not go do some time for Cintas, Paycom, Enterprise, etc?

I had to sling copiers to get past the "no experience." It was no fun but worth it in the end.

I've heard of people going this route to get in. I had 8 years of financial/insurance sales prior to landing in devices. I also went to the medical sales college in Denver. They just recently opened another in Tampa. This greatly benefited me as I was able to learn anatomy, procedures, instrumentation, companies, sales pitches, etc. Now this is definitely not for everyone. It isn't cheap and is a 6 week commitment (they have other options). They have a recruiting/placement team that say they have over 85% placement rate. I have to call bullshite on this. They sent me some shite openings all over the country and that was basically it. I met a girl there that knew a rep in Lake Charles and he was able to line me up with the manager that hired me (after nearly 2 months and 6 interviews). I also HAMMERED LinkedIn and device websites. I would send emails to everyone; recruiters, managers, reps. You have to find a way to separate yourselves from the masses of emails they get. I landed a few interviews this way and had an offer from one.

If interested, take a look at medical sales college. It was definitely beneficial for me but do not think that you are getting in because you go. I took what I learned there and applied it to the skills I had in previous sales. The school taught me the language and gave me a small advantage over others. I know any people that were there with me that never broke through.

Interesting. I always wondered if that Med sales college was just a scam to dupe those who are desperate to get into the industry. Sounds like it did help you learn the basics.

She could, but she's already clinical so she has a strong background in the medical field. It would be a big career change if she went out of the medical field.

I always tell people to proceed with caution. I took the sports med course and there were 5 of us. All 5 of us landed jobs. 4 of us found them ourselves and the other (who was the only female) got one through the recruiting/placement team. There was also a spine course going on at the same time with close to 20 students. I haven't heard much but as of probably 6 months ago, a handful landed somewhere. Not good odds there.

I am in Orthopaedics so even though I took the sports med course, I learned enough to be able to talk the language and make a solid impression. Also, I felt much more comfortable in the OR having been in a few during the course and see cases. Again, med sales college is not going to get you the job 95% of the time but I do think it made a difference

That's good to know. I always have people asking me how to get in because they hate their job at XYZ and medical sales looks like a fun job to make easy money. I always laugh to myself. Maybe that was the case 10-20 years ago, but it is not anymore. I don't know any reps who don't work their arse off and put up with boat loads of crap in order to succeed and make good money. I have no complaints but I always try to offer my experience on what it took to get here, and what I do everyday.

When I started we only used salesforce as a way to input calls and keep up with customer info. Now it's required that we use it every single day, for every single little thing. Couple that with actually having to be out in the field making sales (bc contrary to management's belief, sfdc doesn't make our sales for us) while traveling anywhere from 1-3 nights/week, driving 50k+ miles/year, and you don't have this awesome little job where you make tons of easy money. You work tirelessly for every single dollar. That is by no means a complaint, but I do try to offer a realistic perspective of an ever changing industry with tons of regulations.

From what I've heard, Stryker uses the Gallup style interview process, which to say the least, is arbitrary.

You're awesome, better than me. How you can work two jobs is beyond me. I LOL at the girls always trying to hit me up try join their awesome Rodan+Fields team. No, I barely feel I have enough time for my one job and kids, let alone adding a MLM to harass my friends. Good for you, though.
