They use statistics using his demographics. I believe 21 is the age they transition from child to adult in their calculator. So he is a grown man fitting the bill for the elderly now. It has nothing to do with his usage and more with his demographic.

WTF is going on??
Obama blew smoke up everyone's arse for three years grinning and laughing about his master plan Obamacare which all along was a Ponzi Scheme.
The government supported it but only voted to subsidize it through 2025.
Now every Democrat is blaming Trump

Its going up because care is more expensive, people are using more of it, and carriers are trying to make the math work. It’s not really about which party’s in charge — this was baked into the system years ago and was bound to hit eventually. Getting rid of illegals will help greatly but you won't see those benefits immediately.

The subsidies for the affordable care act have expired
My policy jumped from $387.00 to $453.00. I’m 54 and out of shape.
How the hell does it make any sense for me to be paying significantly more for my 21 year-old healthy son?

Young healthy people pay for you old fatties. That’s insurance … not that it’s always logical

So you are self employed? Have you talked to an agent about a group plan? I used to write plenty of management carve out groups and now groups are typically cheaper than aca plans.
You didn’t say what plan he’s on but I would look at a hsa $10,000 ded plan. Fund it with the savings and let him take the tax deduction.

It’s not going to stop until everyone just refuses to pay. Throw your bill in the trash. America has the worst healthcare system and costs among modern countries and their doctors have become nothing but drug dealers.

Not even remotely true
The temporary Covid-era “juiced” subsidies expired, which is what Biden signed into law in 2021. The Covid era subsidies were never meant to be permanent
We are now back to the pre Covid subsidy structure

Sometimes you need to shop around for a new policy. Even if it is the same carrier, same type, same deductible, etc. They will have similar plans with crazy price differences. Maybe it's like the cable companies and they just think a lot of people will just roll over and pay the higher rates without shopping the market due to laziness/apathy.
If this is a marketplace plan on the exchange, you have to switch by Jan. 15 which is when open enrollment ends.
There's also some political fighting right now in Congress over extending the subsidies which I think partially expire this month. Things could get messy.

Gee, I wonder if there’s a recently elected president who could be blamed for this?

America has the best healthcare results of any industrialized country.
Big Health isn’t losing money, they were like Briar Rabbit prior to the ACA passing. UHC wrote the ACA program but opted out of many states, Louisiana being one of them. They are playing the long game on healthcare and eventually will get single payer just like NY got a communist mayor this week.

Youre forgetting the ACA, which was constructed for this very purpose, to frick up our health care.

There is going to be enough pain this year that the policy makers are going to have to do something. Yet to be seen what that something is. Honestly, i'm completely on board with a public option for everyone if they were previously on the ACA. Just let them buy in to Medicare and let's roll. That seems like the easiest fix there is.
