My 2008 TL has a rattle on start up. Sounds sort of like a diesel when you accelerate. Worsewith cold weather lately. As you drive and the car heats up it goes away.

I went to Acura for my oil change and routine maintenance. They mentioned a couple things that would cost $2800 to fix. I declined. Call them back to ask about the issues again and they did not write it in their notes and no codes came up when they ran it. So it’s a dead end there.

I went to multiple car and Acura forums and “heat shield” keeps coming up. Along with stories of high dollar dealer repairs and the noise coming back. But “heat shield” is a common theme over a few sites. One guy mentions he’s had the problem for 5 years now which tells me it’s not a big deal. Just my car getting older?

So I’ve gone with option A and B.

Option C is always ask the OT, endure the mockery for the couple of legit mechanic answers I will get.

Thoughts????

If it sounds "tinny", then it's probably the heat shield. My old truck made that sound after a while on start ups and accelerating from a stop.

I have an 08 TL as well. It sounds like you need a valve adjustment. A defective heat shield would sound like beans hitting the side of a can.

Never go to a stealership to get a quote on a potential repair. They will attempt to rob you.

I’d take it to your local mom and pop place and ask if you need a valve adjustment.

Our 2012 Odyssey (similar V6) had a rattle/loud clicking at startup that went away once it warmed up. We replaced the timing belt a bit early, along with the water pump while we were in there. No more rattle/clacking. I don't recall the cost but under $1k IIRC.

I have an 04 Accord with the same engine as your TL. Mine makes the same noise. Its not a heat shield because it "ticks" faster with RPM increase. Noise goes away after only a mile or so of driving. In the summer or warmer days it doesn't do it. I've searched the TL and Honda forums and came up empty handed also. I suspected valves out of adjustment, but the noise comes more from the passenger side of the engine. I've replaced the timing belt, tensioner and the water pump and the noise was still there. Let me know if you find an answer.

Sounds like bearings on your belt pullys. When they heat up they expand and run smoother. Test by putting a metal sucker rod up against the pully bolt and the other end right in front of your ear resting on your skin. If the bearings are bad it will be a really loud grindong and ticking.

Did you try unplugging it and plugging it back in?

How many miles?

I'd just keep driving it. 10yr old acura isn't going to sound like a Lexus on startup.
