Well, he was stealing

“The theft became a robbery when the alleged suspect allegedly used force to resist apprehension by the store employees,” the Springdale Police Department wrote on its Facebook page.

They probably lose hundreds of thousands in revenue daily to "water cup" sodas. They should make an example out of this kid
Seems like the solution to losing hundreds of thousands of revenue would be to move the soda machine behind the counter.

this sure sounds more like a misdemeanor theft charge
Probably was until he tried to run the guy over with his car

Google says this is the Arkansas robbery statute. Seems to fit the facts.
5-12-102. Robbery.
(a) A person commits robbery if, with the purpose of committing a felony or misdemeanor theft or resisting apprehension immediately after committing a felony or misdemeanor theft, the person employs or threatens to immediately employ physical force upon another person.
(b) Robbery is a Class B felony.

The day after they did this at least 85% of their drink machines would "be down" indefinitely

The manager spotted the three and told them to return the soda. Only 18-year-old Cody Morris refused, police say.
The manager even ran out and tried to block Morris' car from leaving, but the suspect reportedly drove his vehicle in reverse and hit the worker twice before speeding away.
I wouldn't be surprised if this manager is reprimanded for going after a suspected criminal in the parking lot.
When I worked in retail in college you could be fired for going after someone who you saw stealing. You were to report it to loss prevention and that was that.

McDonald's is renowned for their cost efficiency. I'm sure they've come to the conclusion that they're able to serve more customers at a quicker pace by having the soda fountain in the dining area. If they want to make an example out of this kid, let them. Not all theft is created equal, but this place would lose their mind if they saw someone taking a candy bar at a Walgreens, so I don't see why this guy should get off scot free either.

things that are news worthy: not OP

Yea this became robbery when the kid used his car as a weapon to escape. It's arguable, but nonetheless is definitely probable cause for a robbery charge.

that's a lot of stupidity on both sides over a dime's worth of syrup and some water.

This story is worth it just for a bunch of people to think about the difference between theft and robbery.

Chasing someone into the parking lot at your $10/hr job because they didn't pay for 12 ounces of soda?
Oh. Okay
This guy will probably end up owning multiple franchises and become a multi-millionare. People shite on McDonalds but if any smart person started working there in HS and totally dedicated themselves to it and made it their only career goal I have no doubt they would end up a millionaire considering the size of the company and the people they are competing against.

Exactly how do you return the soda?
Sounds like a power trip manager. Run them out, no need to get cops involved over a child sized cup of soft drink.

Like they don't fill the soda cups up with 80% ice and only 20% soda.

Alright, what should they do about someone who foregoes the drivethrough and just walks in with their own container and fills up? Sure, the cost is negligible, but if you don't draw the line somewhere, eventually they're hopping the counter and helping themselves to the fries.
