I went to college with a bunch of kids from McAllen. They all seemed to have pretty decent redneck fun down there. But.....that was about 20 something years ago.

I'm looking at attractions, and the best they're coming up with are bowling allies and fricking movie theaters. I'm going to really fricking hate this place.

only for two months, right? you can tread water for two months, don't know if I'd make a border crossing these days, but there is some really good tex/mex food down there, especially breakfast places, I'm talking mom and pop places, not chains, some of the honkytonks might be better than what you'd envision

Since you don't know anyone down there (I assume), it's best to spend all your weekends somewhere else better.

South Padre Island is by far the best option that is closest. Good beach and beach town. Port Aransas/Corpus Christi isn't that far away either and would be another solid weekend getaway given your assignment stuck in McAllen.

If you notice a trend in my suggestions, it's get to the coast. Those are the 2 best Texas coastal towns to you and will be the best way to spend your weekends. I think you'll actually enjoy your weekends at those spots on the coast. It's been a while since I've been to either SPI or PortA, but I've driven with friends from Houston and College Station for weekend getaways multiple times down to those places and we always had good times.

ETA: You're only about an hour from SPI and 3 tops from the Corpus Christi Bay area.

I'll agree with this. One of the worst places in the US. One of the poorest, most residents don't even have a HS degree.

Not sure. I pretty much stopped following the story once they said Mexican authorities arrested a cartel member for the murder. I figured he'd be released within a day or two.

I'm hoping the territory goes to South Padre Island (I'm a pharma rep), because if so, I'm just going to move there instead and commute to McAllen when I need to.

So let's change the subject: what is there to do on South Padre Island?

Learn to speak some Spanish. I do some work down there from time to time and am at a serious disadvantage due to my lack of Spanish language skills.

Pretty much the same options of stuff to do that you'd have at most other Gulf Coast beach resort towns like Gulf Shores, Destin, Fort Morgan, etc.

There's just a few more Spanish speaking folks around.

It's really Texas' "premier" beach resort town I guess you could say. People do travel from all of the major cities and colleges in the state to get away there. With college out for the summer, your timing is pretty good, but not spring break good (which is on par with Panama City's).

1. Stumble on aftermath of drug deal in the desert
2. Abscond with money while evading assassin who may actually be Satan himself.
3. ???
4. Profit

You'll find a nice beach, eats, drinks and a few hot chicks over on South Padre --- not so much in McAllen.

Fify

I've done work there and Hildalgo, Laredo, Eagle Pass and all the way to El Paso. A bunch of work and made a bunch of money. It's different, strange and like an outlier area of the US, which in fact it is. It's borderland so it's virtual Mexico and United States. For the most part it is a fluid area. Think of it as that, focus on it and hone your game and skills. I'll say this. It has a lot more money than anyone would think and if you can make it in this area you have earned your stripes. Good luck.
