Two other things. Eat at Zamoras a bunch.

And find an old Mexican woman that makes tamales ( and this is all over-just ask) and buy from her frequently.

It's not as bad as some say.

For real find an old mexican woman who makes homemade salsa/Pico/tortillas/guacamole/tacos and hire her to cook and clean for you.

McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville, the entire Rio Grande Valley is pretty much Mexico. It sucks.

South Padre Island is about your best bet

Good description, it's not just where redneck meets ---back. It's a different place, not really TX, not really MX. There are some different folks down there, not terrible. A lot of the valley is that way.

McAllen Texas: what is there to do?Aside from being stabbed by drug smugglers of course. Just got notified that they're transferring me out there for a couple of months

good lord, man...it is not like you are sentenced there for eternity...two months is barely long enough time to learn your way around town...

just pack your shite up and head down to soak up a totally different culture...

I find that short-term experiences like that are basically what you make of them. make yourself miserable or enjoy the adventure...your choice...

Also I think Moses Garza III lives in McAllen, and works at an HEB in the area if you want to connect with him

nah, it's not El Chico's, but it's not what you're going to find across the border if you go in country a ways either, it's definitely a hybrid

Learn to speak some Spanish. I do some work down there from time to time and am at a serious disadvantage due to my lack of Spanish language skills.

Ditto, used to frequent there and Laredo 3 or 4 times a year. It's almost like Spanish is the first language, if you don't know any it will be a disadvantage for you.

I have always wanted to go on a hunt or a fishing trip to Lake Guerrero and now that I am thinking about it, McAllen is fairly close to Lake Guerrero...most of the lodges will actually pick you up at the McAllen airport...

I would check into a guided trip of some type, if you are into that sort of thing....

I've never heard of it so it sucks and there's absolutely nothing to do. All the women are hideous and stuff.

I've never been to McAllen, but I imagine that the whole region is somewhat similar.

When I pictured Laredo, I envisioned some kind of Texas-meets-Mexico culture where I could find some dirty honky-tonk bars playing country music with men wearing cowboy hats drinking tequila.

In reality, it was basically Mexico, just technically on the US side of the border. I didn't see any non-hispanic people (except for other travelers) in the brief time I was there.

Stay at the Embassy Suites. Best hotel in the city. And it's not that great.

Eat at Sante Fe Steakhouse (not the one that you see around here). It's local and one of the better places to eat in McAllen, Mexico.
