BATON ROUGE – In a quiet email Wednesday, the mayor’s office issued a news release warning of a significant revenue reduction to the city-parish budget should the proposed City of St. George successfully carve out a new municipality in East Baton Rouge Parish.

The mayor’s office said St. George could suck about $48.3 million from the city-parish budget annually. Mayor Sharon Weston Broome’s office called the budget change “devastating.”

“This analysis shows the devastating effect an incorporation would have on the remaining residents of the City-Parish who, currently, are not allowed to vote on the issue,” the mayor said in a prepared statement.

quote:

Broome threatened a government cutback should St. George move forward: “Given that budgeted amounts for debt service and constitutional mandates cannot be reduced, these numbers reveal that every City-Parish department and agency would need to be cut by a minimum of 18% across the board. If we protect public safety from the cuts – our police and fire fighters – the budgets for all remaining City-Parish departments and agencies would need to be reduced by a minimum of 45%.”

“A budget reduction of the magnitude described in the study would equate to cuts to City-Parish services as well as sweeping cuts to all agencies that receive local government support.”

To plan for the likelihood of St. George being approved by voters in the fall, the mayor’s office said it is requiring all departments and agencies to submit a version of budgets that account for a 20% cut. Departments and agencies will be required to outline service impacts associated with the reduced funding level.

I’m thinking They’re gonna need a hell of a lot more than 20%..has anyone done the math to see how much tax money ST. George would take?

Straight out of Gov Edwards and the Progressives playbook. Scare tactics.

Don’t whine to me. Tell me how you are going to maintain vital governmental functions in the face of budget cuts by trimming unnecessary and bloated programs. That’s what a leader would do.

Haldane was going off this morning about proposed legislation that would basically allow the Governor to block any incorporation that would impact over xxx thousands of people. It is so narrowly written that anyone paying attention could see it's made exclusively to block St. George.

If anyone can find a link to the legislation, that would be greatly appreciated.

You left out the best part which is Broome saying she fully supports the bill that would allow the entire parish to vote on St. George because their "breakaway" would negatively affect the "entire parish".

1. It's not a breakaway.
2. The "entire parish" is not negatively affected, just the portions that leech off of St. George.
3. She's basically saying the citizens of St. George have no right to decide their own future.

If that's not enough to vote her out next election, I don't know what it will take. I think St. George will pass easily, but the parish as a whole is lost because the morons will keep voting Broome types into office.

I thought St George was the ones who would have revenue problems after the split? At least that is what Together Baton Rouge is saying.

Truth is, EBR already has revenue/spending problem now and wishes it could raise taxes.

Shouldn't there be a lesser need for money since a giant area doesn't need the money anymore?

Murphy Paul is going to be the last man in BRPD. Everyone else with the ability to lateral will flee at greater rates than we're seeing now. She can say she will protect their budgets, but they're already underpaid and use outdated equipment. This will just put them further behind the rest of the departments in the area.

EBRSO is dishing out raises to their employees and they don't have to work for Broome. I can see a few changing departments if they can get over the lack of civil service.

This 20% cut has always been why they're all so against it. Their gravy train is leaving. They don't actually think the St. George movement is racist, but they know that word stirs the pot enough to get the uneducated masses riled up.

I always laugh when I see a Together BR bumper sticker because it's about as clear of an "I'm an idiot" giveaway as you'll find.

SB 63

The population in East Baton Rouge was 440,171 at the last census. The next highest is Jefferson with 432,552.

Exactly.
But, remember St George area pays disproportionate amount. All the while using less services than rest of parish.
