I have nothing but respect and admiration for the good teachers who choose to wade into this jungle and salvage whatever can be salvaged from it. I do think good teachers exist. I doubt that the person who sent this email is in that category, seeing as she is incapable of handling criticism or articulating a logical counter argument, but, sure, there are good teachers. Of course there are.
Are “most” good? I doubt it. I certainly don’t think most are “amazing” and “wonderful.” There aren’t many professions where most of its professionals are amazing and wonderful, or even good. Why would teaching be any different? It would be wrong to demonize teachers, but it’s just as wrong to canonize them. The very act of getting a teaching job isn’t in itself heroic. Some teachers have selfless motivations in pursuing a career in education, but some are more motivated by the discount on their college loans, and the exorbitant number of vacation days, and perhaps by the fact that they can’t think of anything else to do. Every job has perks, and in every job you have people who are more interested in the perks than the job.

It's just a job. In fairness, it's a job that I could never do.

Who is Matt Walsh, and why should I care what he has to say?

You don't have to care, but he's right on this.
The "teachers make a difference" crowd is a big problem with why our K-12 education system sucks. Higher ed is sinking fast, but there is still talent in the classroom.

I thought he was talking about the guy from America's Most Wanted.

I love my job. I hope my students find my class to be helpful to them as they move forward in life. I have to say, both of my sons speak highly of their former teachers. Mr. Walsh is entitled to his opinion though.

I just asked who he was. I actually don't know.

Unfortunately there are a lot of bad teachers that give the rest of us a bad name.

Didn't he play basketball for the Florida Gators like 15 years ago??

I consider the public school system to be a cannibalistic mutation that brainwashes our children, devours their individuality and their creativity, and annihilates the moral values their parents instilled in them
Yeah, that's my goal every time I step into my classroom.
Dude attacks a large profession as a whole, then cherry picks one response from a member of that profession to further his point. Absolutely fair.

You're exactly right. Had that permed hair and wore a headband. I didn't know he was a writer too.

Is this the same guy that recently said Christians shouldn't watch Game of Thrones because it shows boobs and doesn't bring you closer to God?

Some teachers are better than others. I think the problem is the number of unqualified teachers that exist today. Just because they squeaked by in college and got a teaching certificate, it doesn't mean they're actually qualified. I've had plenty of teachers that should have never been allowed to teach.
But, to be fair, I have had the pleasurable luxury of having some amazing teachers. There are many out there who love their jobs and take it very seriously. Those teachers left a lasting impression, and I thank them for their effort.

Some teachers have overinflated egos. While I don't feel that he is wrong, it is not a major problem in my experience. A lack of structure at home, and the allowance of Special Education students to act how they wish, without consequences, are our two biggest issues.

Why are you wasting your time reading The Blaze?

I clicked on the article, expecting to learn who this guy is.
Apparently he is just a blogger with really bad opinions.
Who gives a crap what some random dude has to say about this, or anything?
