it isn't wrong to make assumptions

In the engineering world, I would actually agree with LNCHBOX.

If this problem were on a Linear Algebra test, I would stick with undefined, or at least show how the double mug mathematically relates to the other variables as a final answer. Not all math problems are solvable, nor are they meant to be.

Just want to say that this is why I love a good math thread on the OT. 20 pages of bickering with 80% of the replies being intelligent, even if they're wrong, 15% of the replies being the 60 and 70 idiots, and 5% of the replies being LNCHBOX doing his thing.

And as a former Linear Algebra teacher, I'd give you a zero.

Yea... I don't think this facebook meme was meant to be included in that category...

Well your problem sucks.

It doesn't define what space these equations are in, it introduces variables that are not defined, and it forces your students to make assumptions in order to arrive at a solution.

Or no parentheses, since the problem had none, and 5 + 1 x 10 = 15.

cause they are just pictures... nothing further can be assumed. Do you know the fl oz of the mugs or anything at all? no, you see pictures.

You argue for the sake of arguing. It's what you do in most threads in which you participate. It's your thing. This is your OT persona.

That's solution you get with one assumption. With no assumptions the solution is undefined.

The solution that gets you "undefined" requires you to assume that a fricking FB meme is unsolvable because in a math problem involving hamburgers, bottles, and mugs, a picture of two mugs =/= 2 single mugs. Given the context of the entire situation, arguing the answer is undefinable is asinine.
