I get that, but he seemed to be going way too fast given the conditions. Icy roads weren't exactly a surprise

If there was freezing fog/freezing drizzle, visibility may have been very poor. I agree he is likely going to fast for the conditions, but it is difficult to tell exactly what all was going on.

How did DOTD not have the interstate shut down before this happened? Seems they would have sent crews out to check roads and see it was iced

This is what I would want to do as well, if at all possible.

Why was he going that fast to begin with? Everyone knew we were going to have inclement weather.

I don't disagree, but to me this is no different than people that haul arse in super foggy conditions (drove through that myself today). Visibility at some points was less than a tenth of a mile and you had some people blowing through at over 60mph. Just reckless and dumb IMO.

Yes speed matters, but a simple small car can be going 15 MPH and still not be able to stop on ice..... believe me I’ve been there.... an 18 wheeler makes that like 100 times harder.....

That dude wasn't going 15mph but thanks for the anecdote.

Kind of hard to brake on sheet of ice. Man, some of you folks are dumb.

True, but there appear to be a shite load of other vehicles who weren't going too fast before they hit the ice to stop. You don't have to be smart to see that

Looks like a military convoy of tactical vehicles. I see an M998 HMMWV in that video with other military vehicles in front of it.

If you're getting freezing rain, it can be tough to treat roads. The treatment just washes off if it moves back and forth between sleet/freezing rain/rain.

Black ice sucks something awful. Because it can come up quickly.

Really? I drove safely on ice Sunday from SW Kansas City to Wichita and that is after driving safely on snow and ice from Audobon, IA to SW Kansas City.

Ice is not an ideal driving surface, but it doesn't have to be dangerous.

Really? Ice and Black Ice are two totally different things.

Sad thing is injured people are going to die from hypothermia if EMS isn’t able to remove them fairly soon.

Everyone here and in the path of winter weather needs to keep this in mind in the coming days when making a decision to try to get to work. If you have to use the phrase "try to make it into work", just stay home. We are all southern people with mostly mild winter driving experiences. Your life is not the only one you will be putting at risk.

I suspect, and hope, this will give alot of employers pause in the coming days as far as expectations of their employees. Be safe, folks.
