That made me go to Wikipedia.
I looked it up as well. The 15 footer caught in Alabama last year was believed to be 24-28 years old based on its leg bone.
One thing that has always puzzled me about most animals is that the biggest/tallest/heaviest on record are always assumed to be the oldest, but that isn't the case in humans. We tend to max out physically between 20-45 and start our decline from there.

yeah humans stop growing. gators don't. that's why they assume huge = old

For all of you guys winjing about scale- let's put it this way......
That gator is hung off of a 7000 series Deere tractor- that is most certainly not a toy and would have a loader capable of dumping material into a real semi truck.
Bastard is big. No doubt.

Comon. You don't kill something that big. Catch it with your bare hands and keep it as a pet.

they were too busy trying to hide the manatee skins and bald eagle feathers

I was told it was 18'. Never saw it measured. Hard to tell from the pic but it looked atleast as big as that one. I know it was the biggest creature I've ever seen...and I've been to the mullet toss at Flora-Bama

Love how the kid is standing next to the front right tire pretending to touch the gator or whatever while its held up way to the side of the left front tire.

yep, that pic is off, used to do something similar as a kid after fishing, hang a fish on a tree limb then back away a few feet and hold your hand in line with the photographer as if it's holding up a stringer, a 2 lb. bass can look like an 8 pounder pretty easily

They should have tagged it instead of killing it.
I'm all about killing and eating gators, but the record breakers should live.

massive alligator that hunters estimate was just shy of 15 feet was found recently in Florida and officials are trying to determine just how large it was.
Estimate? How goddamn hard can it be to measure the thing? Everyone has a 25' tape measure laying around.
