vast majority of mass murderers in recent memory only began to learn about weaponry once they decided they were gonna kill people. Most bought off the shelf and used as is. Now we have a rich guy who used a bumpstock, and mowed down 59 people. I think it's pretty reasonable for someone to say "wait, I though fully auto was illegal. Doesn't this thing make it fully auto? Maybe we should make that illegal so that it's harder to accomplish shooting into concert crowds with basically an automatic weapon"
as opposed to "well they can make one of them there bumpstocks out of aluminum or wood, so what's the point?"

well now someone with means HAS used a bumpstock, so it is logical to make them illegal, because they make semi autos fully auto. There is no sound logic otherwise. You can't just flip flop on your stance and pretend it makes sense.
Should we allow people to murder simply because murders are gonna happen anyways? Your logic would lead me to believe you think that should be exactly the case. Prove me wrong.

Go ahead. Make it illegal. I don't care. Seriously.
But there were mass murders before bump stocks and there will be after.
It literally doesn't make a difference.

And I'm not familiar with how prevalent copycat crimes are. But I can't help but think there are some potentially troubled/evil folks going, "what the hell? It's THAT easy to make a semi auto rifle pretty much fully auto?!"
I've been around guns my whole life. And own them. And I had NEVER heard of a bump stock until this POS mowed people down with them.
And I'm not familiar with how prevalent copycat crimes are. But I can't help but think there are some potentially troubled/evil folks going, "what the hell? It's THAT easy to make a semi auto rifle pretty much fully auto?!"

your logic is scattered. No one is saying we should just ban everything that is capable of killing dozens of people. The point is that this particular addition is a workaround to something that is already illegal.
