They probably thought the gunman was on the ground. That would have been my first assumption as well.

Exactly. Nobody ever expected for him to be shooting from the top of a fricking hotel. The only time I've ever heard of anything like that was the nutcase who killed all those cops in NOLA in 1960s or whatever.

We have gone through this today and someone got a timeout for it. I would advise you to STFU and talk about something else.

What?

You do not know where the nearest piece of cover is that can accommodate them, so the logical thing to do is get down.

And the guy from the UT-Austin tower.

Its natural to do for one. But no one knew the shots were coming from up high until later, I mean I'm sure there were police at the concert so if the shooter was walking around on site the police would have likely engaged him very quickly and laying down would have been a good move by the audience.

In one of the videos you can see a uniformed cop running around as confused as the crowd. The guy really just had a perfect opportunity for slaughter.

I'm surprised, in this day and age, this has not been thought of before by law enforcement to prevent. They certainly do so when a President comes to town... an event with 22,000 people is certainly a target.

Having said that... I don't know how you prevent it other than scanning bags that come into hotels (will never happen -- don't want a police state), or just not having the event in close proximity to a vantage point like that.

I agree with this. Godforbid any of us here have to face our instincts in a situation like this.

Not sure if it's been posted yet but one popular video I saw showed people scattering and you could see a cup on the ground get hit by one of the shots right near their feet
That isn't good enough for rocket. He wants to see the people blasted.

It's scary that people didn't have a clue where the shooting was coming from and thought it was safest to get down. Doing so just kept them in line of fire. Anyone saying well I would have done this or that is retarded. Until you are faced with a situation like this you don't know exactly what you will do.

That's another odd thing. He has all these guns ready to go, right?

What's with the 4 burst? A lot of time in between his rounds, and he only empties 3 or 4 drums (I think there were only 3 or 4 rounds of shots)?

Was the response that quick? With 15 weapons, you'd expect many more rounds of bursts.

ETA: When I say "rounds" or "Bursts" I'm referring to the 3 or 4 separate mag dumps of 100 rounds give or take.

Michael Soles shot up downtown Wichita in 1976. He came up for parole earlier this year.

I'm listening to the first 20 or so minutes of the LVPD scanner...the first team that made it to the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay came upon a security guard who had been shot.

Perhaps he responded immediately when the fire alarm went off? And the shooter came out of his room for a moment to stop the security guard.

You're speculating and likely wrong. What would the FBI be without, you know, investigating.

I said they'd investigate, but they're not going to answer all of these questions people have. Sometimes - many times - there is no clear answer.

Might have been drunk off his arse, or fricked up on something else. Might have burned his hands or was dizzy from the noise. Who knows?

None of that is really very feasible. It's impossible to protect against every possible scenario, and those massive Vegas hotels can't scan and regulate every bag and person coming in and out. The cost in equipment and manpower would be tremendous.
