This is a serious question.

Are public shootings more common now or is it that we hear of them more now than in the past?

Not sure...from the link I posted, the guy they interviewed seemed kind of like a hipster, and the shooter was just chillin' at the pool with a beer, so .

While they were not unknown before, they seem to have increased after the UT Tower shootings in 1966

IMHO this is at partially connected to the rise of TV, where everyone can be famous for 15 minutes

I think that is the same area where Brenda Spencer shot up a school killing 2 people in the 70's inspiring Sir Bob Geldoff to pen "I don't like Mondays".
