BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Martha White, the woman known for her “instrumental role” in launching the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott, has died.

Family members tell WAFB White died on Saturday, June 5 at the age of 99.

The Baton Rouge Bus Boycott happened on June 15, 1953.

The family says White was 23 when she refused to vacate a seat on a Baton Rouge bus reserved only for white passengers. Another African American woman sat down next to White and urged the other riders to stick together and remain on the bus.

The driver threatened to have the women arrested and summoned the police. Police and the bus company manager arrived at the scene. The driver was informed that Ms. White was within her rights per a city council ordinance to desegregate buses that was previously passed.

Family members say her bold action and the actions of others served as a model for the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

99 is a damn good run for people that grew up around smokers, char broiled beef, and homes with lead paint.

I'm in my 30s and I doubt I'll make it into my 70s.

ETA: Holy shite, this means I'm at least middle aged.

The left considers Floyd the modern day version of folks like White and Rosa Parks.

Sad times we live in.

I’ve decided to boycott CATS for life in remembrance of Ms White’s life and contribution to the Civil Rights Movement

And to think that it was all for nothing and how much WORSE white supremacy became over her life. She must have been very sad to see the levels of white supremacy that have culminated in President Biden’s historic and brave speech of last week where he pointed out that white supremacy is the biggest threat in America today. Far worse than any threat posed by Al Qaeda or ISIS.

RIP. Sorry white people let you down more and more as you aged.

I think you are being sarcastic.

I imagine she looks at this younger generation of social activists and think they are a bunch of cry babies. She had real challenges to deal with just like a lot of people in her generation. And we are one of the least racist nations on earth BECAUSE of the changes that people like her helped push.

I don’t know man, that’s a dangerously radical view. I’m pretty sure you just made a Government white supremacy watch list.

Hmm... She was 23 in 1953 so she was born in 1929/30, depending on her birthday. This is 2021. To be 99 she had to have been born in 1921/22.

Maybe the media is lying about who she is? Or she was actually in her 30s during the boycott?
