a “normal” person feels a bond with another, but I feel an open-ended, deep love — very quickly. And this is where things get tricky, especially as a teacher.

Years ago, I was intensely bonded to my students. I loved them quite like a mother loves her children. The loyalty, dedication, and protectiveness I felt ran so deep that leaving them was, literally, excruciating. I didn’t understand why I felt such intense attachment to my students and I didn’t know how to cope with letting them go, year after year.

Yes, love. I am a teacher with too many nerve endings, but the pain of loving kids and then letting them go over and over again is, in the end, quite worth it. The brick wall has been removed, and I have never loved teaching more.
