No. We need fewer cops with more of a focus on actual police work and less focus on perpetuating city revenues.

My answer is over simplified. You answer works too. I think the end game is money but in order to get better cops the pay has to equal the standards. Small town cops gets a few dollars, wear a gun in public, a badge and continue to be the bully he was in school. The opposite end is LSP with higher standards and higher pay.

I'm sure there are plenty of native Americans there, since they have a casino there. Tunica tribe, if I recall correctly.

I wouldn't say plenty, but the people that are, let you know they are, even if they barely make the cutoff.

The police needs fewer boot lickers, fewer cops who defend each other, and more accountability.

You miss the point. I'm not sure where bootlickers comes in to this but higher standards takes care of the other two. Every business I've ever worked for has workers that will cover for other workers. I state that The LEOs may be the worst. As for accountability what small town has the resources to handle this? Raising taxes is only one answer. Cutting back on money spent elsewhere to raise pay is usually the only other gov't answer. In the case of LEOs writing more tickets brings in more money. I'm not the mafia. I simply know lots of smart and dumb cops and have handled expenditures derived from taxes. It ain't rocket science.

This is a prime case. They paid some part time thugs a few bucks and gave them a title. The bastards murdered a kid and dad ain't out of the woods yet I hear.

So one of the marshals has a bit of a shady past...

quote:

In October, 2011, Lt. Derrick Stafford was indicted by a Rapides Parish grand jury on two counts of aggravated rape. The case was resolved, we reached out to the clerk of court's office for the outcome, we are awaiting those documents.

The article goes on to list the long list of lawsuits currently pending against Lt Stafford too...

End the war on drugs, it will be safer for police and citizen alike. It would end the goddamned proactive policing that leads to you getting pulled over for bullshite reasons so they can see if you are drinking or have drugs.

Stop using cops to generate revenue.

You'll have a more trusting public and reduce the interactions between the public and police. You'll also remove many of the reasons police become corrupt.

I've been saying this for a long time. .... but that isn't the end of the story. You get what you pay for. If you want better cops you have raise the pay along with the standards. The answer? Pay more taxes.

This may help solve part of the problem, but you must also realize that PO jobs in small towns are highly political; it's not what you know, but who you know.

This is something that is so important. These small localities govern themselves by different rules.

Or maybe have less police doing things like writing tickets for inspection stickers ..

If that is what the people want that's what they should demand from the law enforcement top dogs. A little finance accountability.

Playing devil's advocate here: We have a law(s) requiring everyone to have inspection stickers. There are vehicles on the road right now with no inspection sticker. I pay to keep mine up to date. You do same. Who is going to catch the ones that don't? If there are less check points will the number of clunkers on the road increase? Do we really need inspection stickers?

I extend this to speed traps, seat belt violations, etc. If they shift the traffic enforcement personnel to detectives or other positions will that be a better situation for all of us. We got to remember, less tickets will mean less income for them = more cut backs. I'm not suggesting anything. I'm being practical concerning revenue. You get what you pay for.

It is not just a small town problem. St. John has major issues. New Orleans have some of the worst in the country. I could put most cities in the U.S. on the list. Most cops have a code of I have your back and we are more important than the average citizen. Go through Tickfaw La. and you just might get a ticket. We call it Ticketfaw. Some small towns fund their police dept. by the tickets that they write. Sorrento use to do this. I am sure that people who commute to work could name numerous places that write bull shite tickets. There are good cops and they will admit that there is a problem. But most are afraid to talk about it.

I'm amazed at the viewpoint of half the posts in this thread. In Europe and Canada cops just aren't expected to be discharging weapons except for basically active shooter situations (and not the ones where u blow down someone's door in an unannounced swat raid at 3am) Hell, cops in italy are armed with little more than an espresso and a pack of cigarettes.

Some of y'all need to put down your 3rd grade civics books and look at the power in law enforcement and what that can lead to if not properly restrained.

Nah, the popo have too much power to let it go now. Ever wonder why the police have their own lobbying group in Washington/BR? They're entrenched at this point.

So where is the public outcry? Two black cops kill white 6 yr old boy and critically wounds white dad. White lives matter too. Sick of the the race game blacks play. We should be burning down marksville
