Marines who went through Parris Island in the Vietnam Era- question

How accurate is the first 30 minutes of Full Metal Jacket? Specifically the drill Sargent?

Not Marines, not Paris Island and after Vietnam, but the Army at Fort Jackson, SC in 1981 was very similar.

I heard that kind of shite in the 80s, maybe not quite as raw but it was there.
Keep in mind Ermey was actually a DI during the Vietnam era and got his start in film as a technical advisor. He was supposed to be a technical advisor on FMJ but after hearing some of his tirades developed for the actor Kubrick cast him instead.

Yes I knew the Ermey story, how it was there as a consultant but Kubrick was like "No, you are the actor now".

I can tell you that that barrack and those bunks are post 1971 and the time depicted was earlier than that (Big Tet Offensive in Hue in the film was Feb 1968.)

Nah. I found the drill sergeants to be pretty respectful and really good dudes unless you were a jackass. They were always kind to us.

Marines don't have Drill Sergeants. We have Drill Instructors.
It's a very important distinction and can be a costly mistake made by a recruit.
Chances are incredibly high that any recruit who makes that mistake will only make it once!

Well for starters, the Marines don't call them drill sergeants (that's Army), they're called drill instructors...

Either Joe Rogan had a guy on who went over this or it was its own channel with a guy going over military movie accuracy.
He said the main error was in the number of DI's. Probably up to 3 jumping your shite at once. They ARE shown in the movie. Ermey walks in waking them up or something and there are two others with him, they just never speak. Not that I recall.
Wish they had outtakes from FMJ. With the casting story I think also his "you look like a fricking modern art masterpiece." line made them cut more than once as people lost their shite.

Well, my dad always said that Ermey was the closest to what his experience was at P.I.
Only his DI was a black guy, in a platoon of all white guys —- so my dad said, “there was tons of bad language and personal “insinuations”

Can't remember where I read it but I recall Ermey saying that he exaggerated the part for FMJ and it wasn't near that bad when he was DI.

I went through AF basic in 1999 and accidentally bumped into a little punk arse Puerto Rican TI and he talked shite and asked if I was gay... so yeah, I'm not surprised that racial slurs were used back then.

My father said it was exactly like that. R. Lee Ermey was an actual USMC Drill Instructor, so he wasn’t acting.
