Though Mardi Gras usually refers to Fat Tuesday, the Mardi Gras season actually begins on the Epiphany.

The Epiphany is a Christian Holiday celebrated on January 6th that is also known as Three Kings Day or the Twelfth Day of Christmas.

Most folks here in Louisiana observe this Holiday as the time to finally take down your Christmas Tree and to begin ordering King Cakes. In NOLA, the Phorty Phunny Phellows started unofficially inaugurating the season by parading down St. Charles-in a trolley-with a Brass Band. But now there are several groups that take advantage of Mardi Gras' start to celebrate the beginning of Carnival 2018.

Happy Mardi Gras!

Mardi Gras = Day before Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday = 40 days before Good Friday

Good Friday = Friday before Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday = First Sunday after the Full Moon on or during the vernal equinox

Mardi Gras = Day before Ash Wednesday

Also known as Shrove Tuesday.

quote:

The expression "Shrove Tuesday" comes from the word shrive, meaning "absolve". Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christians, especially Roman Catholics who reflect on wrongs they want to repent.

It's the last day of the liturgical season called Shrovetide, before the season of Lent. Many indulge in food that they will later choose to sacrifice for Lent.

The term Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", which refers to the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the fasting of the Lenten season, starting on Ash Wednesday.

“Before New Orleans, there was Mobile, Alabama — the birthplace of Mardi Gras in America. Mobile is home to the first mystic society, or "krewe," which held America's first Mardi Gras celebration in 1704 — 14 years before New Orleans was founded”

Yeah sure, they started it, and then we perfected it. I'm fine with that narrative.

I'm annoyed it's so early this year because it's gonna be cooooooooold still
