I close on my new place in cinco April 7th, picked it up about 20% less than it would have listed for a year ago, and got the seller to put on a new 30 year roof. I'm happy.

There are articles all across the financial ecosystem that discus how the current levels of oil and the negative ripple effects it creates are a net negative for the US economy, and at best it is a zero-sum game for the economy. The boost that more money in your pocket provides has come and gone.

Ya his reply was very odd since you made it very clear why you were moving. That's the OT for you though!

What the hell does that even mean? If I made a million dollars last year as an oil exec, am I supposed to live like I made $80k? $40k? How much saving can you really do to prepare for the biggest SHTF moment of the past 30 years? A situation no one really expected to be this dire.

If they lived like they made half of that they would have money saved and equity in the house. However, if they leverage all of their assets to their full extent then they lose everything when the price of oil falls off a cliff.

And this mindset is the exact reason they are broke. It doesn't take a genius to see how much of the trash is living way beyond their means..

Why does it always have to be trash? These threads always being out the worst in people and the it is obvious that O&G employees have gotten under the skin of a ton on this board. Perhaps it is the minority who exemplify the oilfield trash making oilfield cash and truck nut segment, but that really doesn't explain the widespread vitriol that O&G gets.
I think one of the biggest issues is that there were/are many in O&G who make more than their college-educated peers and that has chapped the collective arse of the public in this area. Now that things are coming to a drastic halt people seem to revel in their new found financial superiority. It's embarrassing that people got themselves that worked up that they'll stoop this low at a time like this.
Disclaimer: I'm not in O&G. I had a cousin making 100k+ per year 3 years out of high school. I wasn't offended then and I didn't celebrate his layoff in November. I'd suggest others do the same and stop letting the fortunes/misfortunes of others affect their own life and happiness.

Trash? These are people who went to Ivy League colleges and then business school or law school or have Masters in Engineering degrees. Some very, very smart people are responsible for getting the oil from the ground into your car. Going beyond the execs, there are also thousands of newly unemployed accountants, HR people, and other office staff with no where to turn.
What do you do for a living that if your entire industry slashed its income by 75% you'd just shrug and keep on truckin?

Everybody says they would live below their means UNTIL their income takes off. After a few years lifestyle catches up with income. Now most will invest in retirement like they should but they are not going to be making $500k living in a $200k house. Even if you save more than average going from a big salary to zero overnight is a big shock.
