Pretty soon after I arrived at my job, they told us that our current department was being outsourced and everyone was being moved to another department. This is happening in 6 months

This department has a later shift than my current job by 1-3 hours depending on who you talk to.

I was already deeply unsatisfied with my current shift because that tended to be much later than what I was promised.

I also feel very co dude t that I don’t have a future with this specific division of the company.

I did approach my manager and asked if I could transfer internally and they said not for a certain time frame.

So I see that I have 3 options.

1. Start looking elsewhere immediately. Explain my reasoning that some aspects of the job changed and I was looking for something else

2. I wait to get promoted before I leave. So I can at least show some success on my resume. This would mean working new shift for probably 4 months. And there’s no guarantee though when I did speak with my manager, she did say that I “would be a good candidate”.

3. Stay, wait til my time period is up. Turn down the promotion which would lock me into the shift for another time period and look internally for something I like.

I lean towards 1 but what do you think?

I think this is simple: start looking elsewhere. It is number 1 on your list for a reason.

It's the tightest labor market in half a century. If you don't like your job there's never been a better time to find a new one.

What? Every job is shift work?

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a single job that isn’t shift work

Start looking for a job and, if asked why you are leaving, say “the work hours aren’t what I signed on for.”

My wife had to do a similar thing at her job when contracts were lost and she ended up working someplace different than what she signed on for. She ended up getting a different position with her previous company and made it clear it was about drive time / availability for kids and not holding them up for a raise.

Those are all shift work except owning your own business.

Sales is definitely shift work. They might work longer than their shifts, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt, that’s shift work. I know a few execution traders who are 2nd shift

If you work for a company, chances are on the job description page, there’s a line telling you what shift it is.

Generally:
1st shift : 8-5
2nd shift: 5- 1ish
3rd shift is 1ish to 8.

Not if you work for a services company. We have people that work from 7 to 4 and people that work from 10 to 8. As long as the work gets done and you are here for meetings, no one gives a shite when you work

If you were told your job was going to consist of certain characteristics, and it turned out that it was false, that itself is reason to find something new. And a very acceptable reason to tell potential employers.

I understand that. But that’s the ground level for how the job actually plays out. From a business organizational level though, I would say that is 1st shift.

With what we do now, we can’t leave til the job is done for the day. That might be an hour early or it might be 3 hours later (thank god I haven’t seen that). But we are still in a shift. We still have groups whose responsibilities overlap so they can do our jobs when we leave for the day.
