It seems smokers who disregard fire safety is not localized to BR, but it is in fact a global epidemic.
quote:
A careless truck driver in southeast China threw a cigarette butt out of the window onto the road while driving and set his own truck on fire. According to South China Morning Post, the driver admitted that he was smoking a cigarette and threw it out adding that the wind probably blew it to the back of the truck. He is identified by his surname Wu.

This happened to me one time actually and I got fired from my job over it when It happened in a company truck. We had a bunch of stuff in the back, cardboard boxes and stuff and they had oil on them. I threw the cig out and later noticed the truck was smoking, as soon as the guy stopped it ignited. I jumped out of the truck, grabbed a bucket and jumped in the ditch and filled it up with water and threw it on the truck repeatedly about 5 times and finally put the fire out before it got out of control. Part of the paint on the bed was burnt and a bunch of the shite in the back was burnt. When we got back to the store the owner fired me. I was 18 at the time, so I chalked it up to being young and dumb, and I also quit smoking over 5 years now, so there's that!

Knew a guy that did this but it was his wife that threw the cig out. He owned a house building company and he was hauling some construction materials on pallets. Pulled over to the side of the road and called the fire department. Dude was an arse so it was good to hear.

Had friends in HS (over 50 years back) who were stacking hay on a trailer at the driver's grandfather's farm. He threw our a cig and set the trailer on fire going down the road back to the barn. He didn't see it for a long time and really had a nice fire going when he stopped.

About 10 years ago I was driving down I-12 somewhere between Hammond and Covington when traffic started slowing down in front of me. About a mile ahead I could see smoke rising in the air, so I figured it was a vehicle fire.
Once I got closer, it was a pickup pulling a double axle trailer full of household furniture. The driver was standing off to the side of the road on his cell phone.
It appears he had thrown his cigarette out of the truck and it landed on the sofa cushions. The trailer was fully engulfed.
I always wondered whether the fire trucks got there in time to save the pickup.
