I did research in MRI for many years, and worked for a couple of the major manufacturers of MRI systems.
There is a lot of questionable information in the article.
1. The vast majority of MRI systems use cryogenically cooled superconducting magnets, they are never "off" in normal operation.
2. It said the hospital worked to try to free the man severing his fingers, the magnets have a "quench" button that can be used to de-energize the magnet in less than a minute in a emergency situation like this. To recover a magnet after a emergency quench, it is possible someone made the very wrong decision to try freeing the man by other methods and avoid the expense.
3. I have never seen liquid oxygen in a portable container in a hospital, and there is no aspect of a MRI system that would employee liquid oxygen. Small cylinders of compressed oxygen are frequently brought into the MRI scan room with patients that require it. Because of a couple of accidents, almost all hospitals use aluminum oxygen cylinders that are safe to bring in the magnet room.
If you become trapped against the magnet by a ferrous object weighing more than a couple of pounds you are not going to be able to free yourself. A engineer working for GE, was carrying a module used by the system that contained a electric motor, they got too close to the magnet and were pinned against the magnet with the module on their chest, not being able to take a breath they died of asphyxiation.
As someone else posted the inverse square law is in play around the magnet, the difference between being able to retain control a ferrous object and having it snatched out of you hands can be only a couple of inches.

Ive heard people who work around metal have to get an xray of their head to make sure no metal particles are in their eye before getting an MRI, any truth to that?

It is true that welders can have pieces of medal in there body. Wether or not you have ever been a welder is a question on an MRI form.

Unfortunately this sort of stuff (although not usually to this extreme) has happened in many places. There is a Red quench button on the wall in MRI suites but if you hit that thing it is like 50 or 100k + to fix the magnet.

I don’t know how the liquid O2 would be prevented from instantly boiling upon exposure to the environment, so I’m going with my conclusion.

MRI techs are not physicians. In the US you get an Associates Degree at a radiology tech school and then work on getting certified.

I was put into one last week, got to my waist, said nope and pulled out.
frick that and I’ve never had a phobia of any kind. Have to go use the upright one later this week.

$50-100 grand if it can be recovered, there is a small chance of permanent damage, then it could be $500k-750K to replace the magnet.

The field is getting like what happened to RNs, the A.S. was all that was needed, but hospitals are now wanting a B.S. in Rad Tech, and that is what most of the kids going into that field are getting.

I used to work in MRI. I have a BS. If you quench the magnet it can actually destroy the building. Look up some YouTube vids of it happening. That magnet is always on. Ain't no 100k fix either.
