I'm sure this wasn't a pleasant death. Wow.

What’s that Walton and Johnson thing? Tragedy in India?

Given 33% oxygen gets you high as balls, he was prolly on cloud nine

I don't understand how he doesn't just let go of the bottle.

Sounds like they need the practice

Magnetic fields follow the inverse square law, so the magnetic field increases in strength RAPIDLY the closer you get, and an MRI machine has one hell of a strong superconducting magnet. Once the magnetic field's got something moving toward the center of the magnet, it's hard to stop it from ending up in the middle. Once it's in there, it can be damn near impossible to get it out without quenching the magnet.

If he was in between the bottle and the magnet, like if his back were to the machine and he was carrying the bottle with both hands across his body, it wouldn't matter if he let it go. If it was pulling the bottle against his center of mass, once the magnet had enough pull on the bottle to break his footing and start pulling him toward the machine, it would be all over in the blink of an eye.

How that steel bottle got anywhere near that MRI machine is the real question. They make special cylinders that won't interact with the magnetic field for use in MRI areas.

But the article says

"Maru's autopsy showed his cause of death to be toxic amounts of inhaled liquid oxygen, according to the Hindustan Times."

I don't get it. How did he inhale liquid oxygen???

From the article

quote:

According to Maru's uncle, Maru had been carrying the cylinder because a junior staff member had asked him to, assuring him that the MRI machine was turned off, AFP reported.

Which makes no sense...I didn't think you just "turn off" an MRI.

Damn I was picturing the tank going in and folding him in like a reverse torpedo tube

Think about using a CO2 fire extinguisher.

That doesn't really help me, but look at this about liquid oxygen...

Paramagnetism of Liquid Oxygen
quote:

This gif is displaying some magnetic properties that can be observed in Liquid Oxygen. Liquid oxygen can be made with the aid of liquid nitrogen, by taking a canister or tank of oxygen and passing it through a copper coil submerged in liquid nitrogen. The coil leads to a container that can capture the liquid oxygen created from the submerged coil. The reason this can happen is because liquid oxygen has a higher boiling point than liquid nitrogen, allowing the gaseous oxygen in the tube to eventually condense and become a liquid without freezing.

When O2 gas is made into a liquid, it gains a slight blue coloration to it due to the manner in which electrons are arranged in the oxygen. The oxygen has some unpaired electrons (normally electrons are paired) that gives it a magnetic property. The reason unpaired electrons do this is because electrons in all molecules actually have magnetic dipole moments, though they are small and tend to cancel out when electrons are paired. So in this case with liquid oxygen having unpaired electrons the magnetic effect that electrons all have becomes noticeable and in return the oxygen molecule exhibits magnetic properties. When the liquid is poured over a magnet the molecules will align to the magnetic from the magnet creating an induced magnetic field of its own. Overall this scenario is known as "Paramagnetism". The liquid oxygen eventually fades away because it boils off, similarly to how liquid nitrogen quickly boils off when left alone. You can see as it boils off the for a moment the "mist" it gives off is still attracted to the magnets.

Apparently the liquid oxygen was attracted to the MRI machine and stayed in close proximity to the man, while still in its liquid form, long enough to kill the man.

I'm going with "reporter doesn't understand science". My bet is on "trapped in machine with leaking cylinder and inhaled super cold gaseous oxygen coming out of said cylinder because PV=nRT is a cruel mistress".

I forgot a belt on in an MRI machine. Tiny belt buckle damned near picked me up off the table.
