A man who was found incompetent to stand trial for a 2006 murder in St. John the Baptist Parish has escaped from a mental institution, according to the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives said Jermaine Diggs, 34, who was facing a second-degree murder charge when he was found incompetent, left a court-ordered psychiatrist appointment June 26 at a facility on Tulane Avenue and never returned.

The Sheriff’s Office first reported the escape in a news release Tuesday.

Detectives said Diggs should be considered dangerous, and a warrant has been issued for simple escape.

Diggs, of LaPlace, is accused of fatally stabbing his 19-year-old brother as he slept on a sofa as a means of “getting the demons out of him.”

quote:

The two’s sister, Shaquandra Diggs, said after the stabbing that her brothers didn’t fight, and that she doesn’t know what provoked the incident.

She said she still doesn’t think her brother is dangerous, though, adding “he just needs to take his medicine.”

“Hopefully he’s safe wherever he’s at,” Shaquandra Diggs said. “We’re all concerned about him.”

I thought that mental institutions had psychiatrists on staff. Why did he have to leave the institution to see one?

This is an odd article.

Generally speaking, when a criminal defendant is determined to be incompetent to stand trial, they are remanded to whatever they happen to be calling Jackson Forensic at the moment. It's a secure, inpatient, involuntary facility.

The idea that someone found incompetent to stand trial for anything, much less murder, could just leave where they were baffles me.

"Forensic" is the term the common folk of the area seem to go with.

Yeah he’s not dangerous just needs to take his medicine so that he doesn’t brutally stab anyone else to death.
