Believing they had stopped a stolen car after a miles-long pursuit, two California sheriff's deputies tried to arrest a carjacking victim, who died after the encounter in which one deputy appears to slam the man's skull into a car door and put him in a neck hold as the other deputy twice deployed his Taser. The car belong to the man and was not stolen. Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick handed Blount a notice of termination, and the deputy will remain on administrative leave until the investigation is complete and all appeals have been exhausted.

I don't want to be "that guy", but why didn't the guy just stop and sort out the issue? Why lead the police on a chase if the car wasn't stolen?

Maybe he had too much weed or a gun in the car?

They shouldn’t have to if they’re doing nothing wrong

The problem is that police always go looking for a problem

If people minded their own business, this world would be a much better place

ETA- Victim was a dumbass for not letting them know that he wasn’t carjacked, assuming that’s the truth and there was no miscommunication in the department

All I can say is everyone needs to rely solely on themselves for protection

Normally I don't defend the police. AT ALL.

This guy reported being carjacked and his car stolen. He got the car back on his own. He never told the police he got it back.

The cops see the car and attempt a stop. He leads them on a chase.

They thought they were dealing with a carjacker. Honestly, if I'm a cop. I probably would have shot him.

cops are only allowed to abuse white people now, any other color guy they apologize for racial profiling and walk away even if they are in the middle of an armed robbery

I am not a “back the blue” type but why are 99% of these incidents with citizens who are cussing and resisting /fighting the police?

I watched the vid. That dumbass doesn't have anybody to blame but himself. Unfortunately for him, his stupidity was fatal. Good riddance.

there was something like this that happened on an episode of Live PD

A dude had just moved from Illinois to Texas... and there was something with his Illinois plate where when Texas cops ran his plate, it came back to a stolen vehicle

the cops did a felony arrest (hands up, get out the car, on your knees, all that jazz)... guy complied

but once things were calmly discussed... it turns out a very small letter on the end of the Illinois plate also needed to be added when the cops ran it... so when the officers ran it with the added letter, the license came back to the correct vehicle & driver

it was a simple misunderstanding that... when talked through completely... was sorted out and everyone went about their way

turns out... the guy had already been stopped like 5 times in Texas b/c of the issue... the cop on Live PD even told him "I shouldn't say this... but with that plate... it's probably better to just ride around with no plate instead until you get Texas plates"

long story short... comply... discuss it as adults with the officers... and all can be sorted out fairly easily

Because that is a sure fire way to get the police to kill you.

This happens more than you would think. Very frustrating for us.

There are people out there that legitimately think any encounter with the police, including a peaceful one, may result in their death. Those people run/won't comply.

Stories like this simply add to that narrative.

I'm not saying that logic is sound, but a sizable portion of society believes it.

Because more than a handful of LEOs are itching for a reason to act like a bad arse, and if you give them one, they'll happily oblige.
