My dad forces mom to watch his shitty TV with him and cuddle on the couch. I can't imagine him hiding in a "cave" from her/us when we were kids.

My SO and our friends rely on me to provide the food for sporting events when they come over. Why would they want to duck off where they can't get that? We got some weird closet people in this world.

I imagine men with such subservient women as your mom and you have no need for a "man cave."

The verdict on this phenomenon is still out, based on the article and the responses in the thread. One makes it sound like an abusive patriarchal construct, while the other sees it as some beta, tail tucking endeavor that sees the man running and hiding from his overbearing woman.

I don't have a "man cave" (although I do have an office that I spend a fair amount of time in), but most likely, it's neither of the two scenarios. It's just a spare room that a guy can keep his crap in and an area mutually assigned as a spot to relax on those apparently rare occasion when the two don't have to be tied at the hip.

The few friends of mine that have what one might consider a "man cave" (they don't) didn't have some "girls: keep out" sign on the door.

How did you ever get even one boyfriend? You clearly have some kind of giant insecurity issue. "Man Cave" is most likely some kind of marketing jingoistic name thought up by stoned advertising workers trying to sell men their products. No adult human male I know with a job and a family claims any kind of "man cave." Grown men have their houses and they pay for all the stuff that is in them. Women on the other hand seemingly spend all of their time looking for dumb crap to worry about. Most women somehow just can't stand prosperity. They have to find a way to be aggrieved. Someone must be belittling them, a man must be doing something to hold them back. They just can't really be this miserable and worthless on their own....it has to be a man's fault somehow. Women surround themselves with ridiculous "feminine" items all the time; 47 pillows/stuffed animals on their beds, doll collections, bureaus and closets full of dresses, blouses, skirts, pants, hats and shoes they almost never wear. entire tractor trailers full of beauty and hygiene products that are all mostly just animal fat or alcohol in some form. In general women are the biggest hoarders on earth...you guys make pack rats look positively spartan. So if a grown man wants to have some sports memorabilia and a big screen tv in one room of HIS F#@KING HOUSE. What possible reason could you have to complain about it. I have a suggestion for you and all the other women who just can't stop themselves from haranguing men who are just trying to live their lives with some joy and happiness. MIND YOUR OWN FU%@ING BUSINESS. This country has somehow forgotten that eminently sage pearl of wisdom that almost every child in the world is enriched with by his or her parents. The key to getting along with other humans is to not attempt to judge or instruct them on the manner in which they choose to live their lives. You either accept it and coexist happily with them or, you remove them from your life by never associating with them. I mean what could be simpler? It really is just that easy. Women for whatever reason just can't abide simplicity. Everything has to be a drama in five acts with deep psychological undertones. Well life isn't that complicated...and quite frankly neither are you.

Figures she would be the type who thinks there is something wrong with masturbation.

This reminds me of the big piece of the chicken bit by Chris Rock. This bitch doesn't even want to allow her "partner" to have anything of his own. Everything has to be hers.

I don't really care one way or the other what people do with rooms in their home. I guess I didn't grow up with someone hiding from the other.. and my own SO gets pissy when I don't want to go out with our friends as well. Seems miserable to want to hide from someone. But like someone else explained, I guess if your partner has their friends over at the same time you have your friends over and the two groups aren't friends, it makes sense.

Not an issue. I don't have friends with the spare time to come over

Anyone who thinks man caves perpetuate the patriarchy doesn't remember how houses used to (are supposed to) be.

The WHOLE frickING HOUSE was the man cave.

Kid's need a play room? It's called outside, motherfricker.

Want to watch the game? Watch it wherever you want. All night. Every night.

That's how it used to be. And now, men are relegated to a little room, usually in a garage or basement, and we are told to be lucky to have that.

My, how men have fallen.

Take back your house, men.

That's what we have. It's basically got his massive book shelf full of books, a comfortable chair, all his mountainbiking gear and a tv/computer. He can go in there and read or watch netflix when I'm wanting to watch my crappy shows that he hates(ex: The Bachelor) on our dvr in the living room. And I can do the same when he wants to watch sports on the big tv and I want to read or do schoolwork.

Ha, no, but she is surely a lovely person if let's this happen all the time

If I walk in the room and Bravo is on, I'm not going to make my wife change it to the ball game, I'll just go in the office, bedroom, or upstairs living room. Same the other way.

We are adding an outdoor kitchen/entertainment area to the house this winter. Replace the office with "outside" or "game room" or "man cave" and it's equally not a huge deal or cause for any sort of analysis of the relationship.

I'm almost certain "man cave" was a term created by someone's wife some years ago anyway, probably meant to be negative, and like the non-dramatic people making up the male gender, it was appropriated and run with as a positive.

what about all of those old movie scenes where the men retreat to a closed off room, put on their smoking jackets, smoke pipes and discuss "business"?

No, massive closet room with a vanity set up in it where she can sit down and fix her hair/makeup

You want your SO to leave you alone....have that in your house. She'll take that much longer to get ready, but she will leave you alone.

I love how they can find the "hidden meaning" of a man cave but can't understand great works of literature.

And yet, they parade through the culture constantly belittling men as stupid, uneducated, and impossible to change.

I'm almost certain as well.

It's just a spare room where one of the spouses goes to enjoy his personal interests that he doesn't share with the spouse. There is nothing wrong with this. It doesn't make you a "beta" or a domineering sexist. "Man cave" is pretty much just joking term.

If you deny that a spouse should have personal interests away from you then you have some serious issues.
