If you want to move this to the Tech board, that's fine, I thought it was better here.

This is one of those stories that you hear and don't believe because you think no one can possibly be THIS stupid. Here's my story, with no embellishment:

I work for a computer services company along with a small ISP. Today one of our customers calls in and says that he has no signal and that his internet hasn't worked for 5 months. I didn't field the original call, that's just what I was told. The service order simply read "Wireless Internet Issues".

Our service is in fact delivered via land-based radios, we are a wireless ISP. From our end, the service appears to be fully functional. I know from previous encounters with other customers this could be a wifi issue or something internal like that.

I drove out to the customers house, knocked, was greeted and then it started.

The customer said to me, in a short, condescending tone, "I want you to understand that before we do anything, I'm not paying for this"

Tempted to walk out, I swallow my pride and say "Let's take a look and see what the problem is."

He leads me to his small office room where sits a small desk with a Dell PC, a small LCD monitor, printer, etc. Everything is powered off. I ask him to show me the problem he's having.

He sits at the desk, turns the monitor on, and points at the big blue box on the monitor that says "No Signal".

At this point I'm pretty amazed, and also know this won't go well from this point forward because he's already been short with me and said he's not paying.

In a probably condescending tone, I tell him that his computer is off and that the monitor is telling him there's no signal from the computer, because it is powered down. He begins fumbling with the flap-style slot where the CD-ROM bay is.

I lean over, point to the power button, and press it. The computer boots to a Windows 8 welcome screen.

He asks me "So if I want to use this, I have to turn this computer on?"

I say, no doubt condescendingly at this point, "Yes, if you want to use your computer, you have to turn it on."

He grabs a pen and paper and writes:

1.) Turn computer on.

I'm in disbelief.

He then asks if he also needs to turn is monitor on.

I respond "Yes, if the monitor is off, you have to turn that on as well."

He senses my condescension and says something about he's not good with computers.

I tell him "I'm sorry if I sound condescending to you, but the first thing you told me when I walked in here was that you weren't paying for this. You don't have an internet service problem, you don't know how to use your computer. So, if you're not paying, then I have to leave now."

He starts hollering "THEN GET OUT OF HERE, AND NEVER COME BACK!!," shooing me with his hands.

I just said "You got it!" and left.

There's not a chance in hell I'm going back to that mans house. Not for a service call, not to reclaim our wireless equipment. frick that shite. This is one of those people who just should not own technology of any kind.

Some people are just a lost cause when it comes to technology. My mom has been using AOL (the actual program) since 1997, and she refuses to use anything else.

If you deal with any form of customer service, this is not shocking.

He sounds like he has mental issues. I can't blame you for being frustrated but you're kinda coming across as the dick here.

That's fine. He pays a monthly fee for internet service, not for computer lessons. I'm not sitting there teaching this asshat how to use a computer for free.

Thanks for airing out my business.

I figured out how to turn on my computer and everything is working great now.

No thanks to you.

I would guess mid 50s, possibly 60. That's no excuse, I know 80-year-olds who aren't this incompetent.

Unless I sense something mentally/genetically wrong with someone, I'm going to have a real hard time not being a dick about something like this. Its almost unbelievable.

Nothing else you really could have done. You were about to make countless laps around the retard track with this guy and still be at square 1.

I hate people.

I get wrong numbers all the time at work, and sometimes I help the people out. Our number is similar to both Cox and Diamond Mazda and a few other places, so I always direct them to the right phone number.

The other day, I got a woman freaking out about reaching elderly protective services and how she NEEDS to talk to Miss Kim for whatever whatever. I tell her that's not who we are and she just keeps asking me to transfer her wherever that place is.

I tell her I'll Google Louisiana Elderly Protective Services and see what I find. She said "Whatever a Google is.. I don't know. I need to talk to Miss Kim"

Uh, if someone from the get go is disrespectful to me, I'm going to have a hard time being polite with them. OP did absolutely nothing wrong or dickish.
