It was at fricking 33k feet. I'd imagine there's only a handful of surface to air missiles with the capabilities to track and hit hit something that high up. That's baffling.

Seems pretty foolhardy to be flying over a war zone.
When you have a bunch of guys running around 30k feet below shooting rifles I doubt there was much concern about a plane being hit

Do they just see an object on radar and fire?
The can do that, but you typically take into account behavior of the aircraft. If an aircraft is on a known airway, at FL330 and not jinking, it usually points to an airliner. You dont fire, unless you are the CO of the USS Vincennes in the 1980s.

It would have to be a highly sophisticated missile possessed by an organized and technologically advanced military, not some rebel in a wool cap

The wiki says the 9M317 can go to 46,000 ft

FIrst generation Soviet SA-2s shot down Francis Gary Powers above 70K in 1960.

Apparently, the separatists just shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet just recently. This could be them at it again.
A fighter jet, or a helicopter?

The fact that it was a large missile and not a MANPAD is the most worrying. Shoulder launched missiles are all over the place. Truck launched is another issue. You don't just call up Nick Cage and order a couple trucks of SAMs

It was an AN-26. A propeller driven cargo plane above FL200

It's still not clear what happened to today's Malaysia Airlines flight but last night, as the US announced new sanctions on Russia, American officials suggested Russian weapons were behind the downing of a Ukrainian transport aircraft on Monday. Here's what they had to say:
"On July 14th, Ukrainians lost an An-26 transport jet, which was shot down from an altitude of 21,000 feet, with eight crew on board. And only very sophisticated weapons systems would be able to reach this height."

Ah shite. This will get messy.

Location of where contact was lost.
Another video
The folks who filmed this one must have heard something to go outside and film it before the smoke was rising.

There you go. Now the waters are good and muddy. Three potential sources here.
Knowing they have the capability, I would look hard at the rebels.

Almost non existent chance of being a terrorism group. Sophisticated military-style equipment was probably used.

Is this gonna turn out to be a Russian version of Gomer Pyle tripping over his dick? I hope it's that and not some fricking cult of death plot again.

"Anton Gerashenko, advisor to Ukraine's Interior Minister, said on his FB page the plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000' when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher."
A similar launcher was seen by AP journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.
