Maybe for the same reason big, strapping guys guard every air crash site in the US?

I am not a conspiracy theorist, but honestly the fact they magically have this ready and are going public tells me it smells like bullshite.
It very well may have been shot down by Rebels, but I seriously doubt Russia was telling them or even encouraging them to do so.

Fair enough. Didn't realize that theory was out there. Everything I've seen through skimming has been pro-russian rebels, on purpose, thought it was a cargo plane.
My issue with that mostly has to do with how the frick could they differentiate between cargo and passenger from 33k feet? Obviously, they couldn't, but why take that chance?

You could actually learn an awful lot. The CVR would be particularly useful - they may have even seen the missile and said something. Even the data recorder could give a lot of info on what systems failed.
