I also remember one of the video rental joints in our town had a separate room that had a sign on the door saying “MUST BE 18 TO ENTER”. That’s where they kept the XXX movies.
I remember the poor, naive girls who used to work some of the video stores, some of which contained the foulest shite ever committed to video. We guys who worked with them tried to do them a solid and preserve their innocence by putting up those movies; however, sometimes they had no choice but to go in the back room along with the raincoat crowd to put those crusty movies up.

When I was stationed in Wyoming, I hooked up with a cute girl that worked at Blockbuster. I would always go there, rent movies, flirt with her and she would come to my apartment when she got off. I had like ten movies that I never returned but never had any late fees thanks to her.
Once I stopped talking to her, late fees out the arse. I want to say it was close to $90 or so.

ours on the NES was that, Mario 3 and Final Fantasy. the worst we ever had happen was some kids threw a chunk of concrete out of the back of a truck going by and hit me in the hand (great shot i must admit). video store called my step mom and she came and got us - after that we could not walk there anymore.

disappointment of having 20 cases showing the movie you wanted to see but nothing behind the case
And the sheer elation when you ask if it’s behind the counter in the return bin.

Something is happening with Blockbuster. They reactivated all of their social media accounts and posted please be kind while we rewind.
wouldn't be shocked if they try to capitalize on nostalgia. If so will be interested to see what that looks like.
It's wild how intense the nostalgia and memories surrounding this one establishment is but they are. Walking the aisles trying to find that new release you wanted, the rush of moving the title cover and seeing there was a VHS available to rent behind it, picking out your candy, knowing a pizza was being delivered to top it off....it was a whole ritual and experience.

All those movie rentals enabled Wayne Huizienga to sell Blockbuster to Viacom for $8.4 billion so he could bring the NHL and MLB to Miami. Many thanks.

The Blockbuster franchisee here in Birmingham was a customer of mine. Dude owned 20 or more stores and had pics of himself with just about every famous actress/actor you could name. He flamed out famously of course.

The picture quality really was a lot better.

There’s a way to recapture this without the need for hard copies of movies. I would very much prefer to go to a physical store and browse there before picking a digital rental I can access at home than spending an hour on my couch arguing about what to watch before ultimately deciding we don’t want to watch anything actually

Well, in 1993 you generally had a few good movies as options most of the time. Now not so much. The 90s was the last great decade of feature films.

Betamax came out before VHS and the format was better in every way than VHS especially picture quality.

Anyone remember Major Video on Vets next to Sizzler in Metairie? If you hung around the Adult Section, you could catch a glimpse when some perv walked out.
Maybe a surprise but most of the adult videos were rented between the 9-5 work hours during the day. Guys and women would leave work to return or rent porn

Sony essentially killed it by trying to insist on keeping it proprietary.

Our first VCR was an Emerson with a corded remote that mom and dad bought from Kmart for about $300
