I imagine that's what cities that were firebombed in WW2 looked like for the survivors. Unbelievable.

How the hell is LA prepared for a major earthquake?
Posted on 1/8/25 at 6:28 pm to LegendInMyMind
It’s like a wasteland… just awful… and all fires are zero contained. This looks to get much worse before it gets better.

Watching a few different evening news stations cover this...All these people are looking for political leadership and some direction.
Guess what? You're on your own.

Building codes mitigate what earthquakes do to a large degree. We're built to withstand them for the most part. We get a few here and there is it is mostly done and over with after 20 seconds and you carry on. It just isn't a big deal 99.9% of the time. San Andreas is estimated to be able to unleash up to a 9.0. Japan seems to have a good grasp on how to build to withstand very large quakes. I'd like to think we've learned a thing or two from them. But if you're talking about the response from leadership that can't be fixed right now but this might have a big enough impact to lead to changes down the line.

I think LA is much better prepared for an earthquake than a large scale wildfire like this. There has been laser focus on earthquake preparedness for decades. Buildings are designs to high earthquake standards,

Aren’t the winds supposed to die down tomorrow?
Seems a good bet to try honestly

Bingo. More reports of running out of water at the hydrants on CBS. But the winds are dying down now. So that's some good news.

The hotel that I stayed in a few years ago in Malibu right on the PCH is gone. As is the pizza place that we got after getting appetizers at Nobu. Really sad. The people there were surprisingly nice.
Do you know the names of the hotel and pizza place by any chance?

The rub is that this fire was preventable or at least we could have lessened the impacts.

There are already statements being made that the California FAIR Plan, the insurer of last resort, and insurance companies may not have the immense amount of capital to cover the losses. This is something I warned about last year, as the STATE’s FAIR Plan was oversubscribed and completely dependent on other policy holders.
I said it would take one big fire through a community to bankrupt the entire system, little did I know it would come less than a year later. The after effects of this will be felt years.
Oof.

She's at the podium talking now....
ETA: She took a military plane back home. She has been in constant contact with emergency services from early on.

Man, that is horrible. I love Malibu - so sad to hear that. Do you know if the Malibu Village Mall made it?

I don't believe it's made it's way to the lagoon yet.

She looked like she was about to jump on a sharp object.
LIterally couldnt even come up with some platitude. I think politicians in general, on both sides, have gotten to used to being treated like royalty in this country instead of the servants they are supposed to be. Then, when shite blows up in their face and people take the gloves off, they fricking short circuit. Its unreal. and if you think she's doing anything other than listening in on phone calls asking the most common sense anybody who can fog a mirror can ask this question too type questions you are out of your mind.
