I do work at military runways and they usually have hills like that near the runway. It’s used for deflecting guns/missiles that could accidentally go off when arming/disarming. I know very little about why, but that’s identical to the hills I see.

Nick Sortor of Timcast is reporting that there are only two survivors. The other 179 are confirmed dead. However, he is not sourcing this.

Looks like they lost the ability to lower the gear for landing and landed going very fast which suggests hydraulic failure.
No brakes obviously but also no flaps or spoilers. They attempted to deploy the reversers at least. Maybe landed long.
Either way, a hard lesson on why EMAS should be required at every runway end.

On a -800 the trail flaps are on Hyd Sys B. If there is failure on that system, there is an electrical motor that allows flaps to be deployed but limited to 15 degrees.
Good piece of info right here

Nothing about this looks like a controlled landing attempt - had to be more damage than just landing gear

I don’t know much about planes but it doesn’t seem possible that landing gear would be so fragile that hitting a bird would cause failure.

If a bird strike caused all of the landing gear to malfunction, that is a Boeing problem.
Not necessarily. There are many factors that could’ve caused this and some of them would have nothing to do with Boeing.

Number of deaths?
Wasn’t the point of the comment. Guy said he was trying to avoid Boeing at all costs. Boeing isn’t the only manufacturer that has accidents. Despite them being all over the news as of late.

So if that thread is accurate it sounds like something went catastrophically wrong while the pilots were attempting a flyby.

Should have landed in water or ground parallel to the runway. Much greater friction to slow down the plane vs concrete. Any belly landing anywhere else beats hitting a wall.
Who the frick directs the plane to belly land on a runway with concrete wall at the end?

85 dead as of right now, 1:12 pm Sun afternoon Seoul time .. more to come, most likely .

If they truly didn't have flaps, I'd think water landing at that speed would tear a plane apart.

Yeah. I figured they would have found the longest runway possible before attempting to land there.

EMAS is ??? Emergency alert system??
How would an alert system help at that point? Honest question.

Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS)
Think of it like a runaway truck ramp, but for airplanes

Better than a fireball.

Flaps look to be at 0 and if gears aren't down it seems like a major hydraulic failure to those parts alone, which sounds super crazy. I'm trying to figure out how a bird strike would cause all of that on any part of the plane.

Curious what they had from a hydraulic standpoint. If it was a gear failure only that’s a survivable situation.
If you still have flight controls and flaps, you have a lot of tools to stop that jet safely. Looks like it veered right and hit a barricade. Rudder authority possibly could have prevented that.
The line up looked good, so I’m assuming their flight controls were functioning. So maybe they did have something. Is a rudder enough to control a skidding jet at high speed? I have no idea. I know I would have had a full boot of rudder trying to keep it on the runway. Again, assuming they veered right, maybe they went off the end, can’t tell from the video.
