It's the same with any form of leather shoes. Growing up, I did this method with soccer cleats all the time.

I would buy a pair of cleats a size or 2 too small then you put the shoe on with socks, fill a tub with water, step into tub and wait 10 mins, get out and stand in the shoes for 30 mins, let dry. The leather expands around your foot and makes for a much better fit.

I actually had wanted to be an alter boy when I was younger and my grandparents tried to push my parents to let me too. They refused. The priest at my church was on the list with abuse in the late 80s. I could have been an alter boy for him in the early 90s.

We used to be forced to go to confession when I was in school and brainwashed into having to confess all your impure thoughts & actions (fapping), of which I did nonstop. Easy prey for priests. But I personally never experienced anything bad.

I don't do it anymore because I buy the correct size now, but it was the best way to make cleats fit best for a sport like soccer without killing your feet "breaking them in".

ETA: Never tried with boots or waterproof. My Ariat work boots, causal boots and "fancy" boots all fit just fine without doing the tub method.
