Luggage racks on SUVs: are they mostly for aesthetics nowadays?

I don't know the last time I've seen a reasonably newer SUV with luggage tied down to the top.

Colorado may be the exception....

With three kids, I have zero room inside the Van. My rack helps a ton.

I hook a rooftop tent to mine a few times a year.

I will throw a soft ice chest up there and not tie it down. Only way it will fly out is from flipping.

I've used them but they are a pain to have to get up there and deal with.

I prefer the hitch receiver carrier.

I have used mine on our Tahoe, but rarely have to. We only have the one kid and a dog right now. Travelling back to LA for the Holidays fills up already. I could see getting a luggage carrier if we have more kids.

I don't see many folks using them at all...too much of a pain in the arse to be climbing all over the vehicle.

I drug the whole thing off the top of my vehicle in a parking garage a while back.

I wish my current vehicle had one, but I don't want to drop the money on it right now. I had a roof tent and stuff with my old LR4.

I'm on my fifth Tahoe and years ago they would come with the crossbars but no longer. You can buy the OEM bars for $200 from GM or you can get aftermarket that work just as well on Amazon for half that.
