Of course it wasn't. The Soviets had beaten us in everything but landing on the moon. We were behind them by a galaxy in space aviation and yet they never put a man on the moon. They sent animals and none were sent out of orbit. Yet we put 2 men on the moon with zero knowledge of the effects of radiation in space.
