MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. (WAFB) - An LSU student died and two Nicholls State University students were hurt after trying to save a young boy from a rip current in the Gulf of Mexico during a spring break trip last week in Florida.
Deputies with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday, April 8 a 21-year-old male \was recovered from the waters in Miramar Beach, Fla. and later died.
The man was later identified by the sheriff’s office as Layne Gravois, 21, of Gray, La.
An LSU spokesperson confirmed to WAFB Tuesday, April 13 Gravois was an electrical engineering student at the university.
Gravois’ mother told a New Orleans TV station her son and his friends were trying to save a young boy from the waters when the three men were pulled into the rip current.
A spokesperson for Nicholls State University identified the two students who were hospitalized as Jordan Servat and Reed Boudreaux.
South Walton Fire Rescue officials told WAFB’s sister station, WJHG-TV, they were pushed to their limits Thursday with mass water rescues. Officials said 11 people were pulled from the Gulf of Mexico that day.

RIP, he seemed like a great person.

That's terrible.
We were in Orange Beach for Easter, and the currents were very strong. While watching my 4 year old play in the surf, I saw several barely supervised children swimming and asked my wife how she thought I should respond if one of them get sucked out.

the flags stood at single red. That still indicates the water as an incredible threat to human life with high surf and strong rip currents
Best to just stay out of the water when that red flag is up.

Did I miss if the little boy made it or not?

Brave kids just trying to do the right thing. Sad to hear.

Don't go out there without a float. swimming for 1 person is hard. swimming for 2 would be risky

Rip currents are no joke. Tourists never pay attention to the flags and this stuff happens every year.

As horrible as it sounds, 9/10 the rescuer dies in these situations. If you decide to intervene, you better accept it may be your last act.

I went to school with 2 guys who watched their dad drown saving their babysitter from a rip current in Destin

Was wondering the same thing, while at the same time thinking I may not want to know.

Not everyone tries to be edgy and make a pun about everything a-hole. RIP means Rest In Peace.

It's instinct with a lot of people. Don't really consider the dangers until its too late.
I don't blame them though, it would be impossible to live with the idea you could save a young child, and didn't.

From what I heard, they tried to form a human chain to reach the child.
I'm assuming it broke and the worst followed. I want to say he was part of a state-championship winning swim team in highschool as well. So it's not like he wasn't a strong swimmer. Rip currents are scary stuff.
