How can they do that? Aren’t they all non profit organizations?

1k per semester really isn't as much as you think.
The girls get lunch everyday if they want it. They have to pay for the house, insurance on the house, insurance for the chapter (which has gone up due to more Greek life incidents. I know for fraternities it's close to $200 a person per year), all of their parties which are usually at nice venues, transportation to and from the venue, security for the parties, food for the parties, Greek dues to LSU, money to participate in the fraternity events, t-shirts for different events, supplies for events, etc...

All of that money for dues, and if her daddy doesn't slip you a couple of hundred when you take her to your formal, you're dating the wrong one.

Just because you are a non-profit doesn’t mean you can’t carry money over from one year to the next. Or try to increase your revenue so that you can pay inflated salaries to employees of your national organization.
Inasmuch as college tuition is a scam to support give aways to bloated college administrators, Greek life has become no different.

Fraternities and sororities get a lot of grief, but in reality they are just co-ops.
Groups of people pool their money to their mutual benefit, paying for room, board, social events, etc.
Networking, friendships and academic support are other added benefits.
It is my experience that the money spent is a good deal financially.
They aren’t for everyone, which is cool.

ISTR our dues were about 50 a month from August to May. Summer allegedly didnt cost anything unless there was an assessment to make up a budget shortfall, which there always was. That covered chapter operations and social events. If you lived in the house, that was about 300 more a semester. I dont remember how much the meal plan was. The food was alright to start the semester. Toward the end you were likely to get tuna fish sandwiches for lunch, and if you were late you might be SOL.

If you factor in food it’s really not that much same goes for fraternities.
this is actually a pretty good perk that isn't brought up that often. dues are pretty close to the price of a meal plan (or at least they were when i was at LSU). lunch and dinner plus you could always ask for a go plate. it was pretty good food too. dues were a reasonable deal based on the food alone (again, maybe it's different today).

Our food wasn't terrible, and some of it was actually pretty good. Our cooks made a mean stuffed bell pepper. But it could be uneven, especially late in the semester when money was short. I ate in the cafeteria during summer school and found the cafeteria food to be better overall. Plus you got breakfast.
ETA I will never forget the guy who came home drunk one night, broke into the kitchen, cooked himself up a whole case of chicken fried steaks, then passed out with the deep fryer still running. A wonder he didn't burn us all down.

We had a guy like that, too. Went to a Mardi Gras parade, got piss drunk and then came home and took a "value pack" (that's what he called the combination of pills he took). He put some fish in the oven a couple hours later we came to check on him and when we opened the door smoke came billowing out. We couldn't get him to wake up - took us quite a while - and when he finally snapped back into consciousness he was pissed off, saying "What the frick are you doing? I'm trying to sleep!"

Back in 2009 my cousin and I found a Zeta (she had the logo on her sweatshirt, don't remember if it was zeta or another sorority but i remember zeta) pretty much passed out in the apartment parking lot. She was drunk AF. We brought her to the Zeta house (it was about 2am) and my cousin got puked on when we were carrying her to the door. A few girls were up and came and got her then proceeded to scream at us for their friend being drunk. frick them bitches.

If they get enjoyment out of it, it’s not a scam. If you aren’t paying for it, it’s irrelavant.
Thanks don’t understand why people put spinny rims on their cars or truck nuts on their trucks, but they do. And it’s their money, so.....

Is that including rent and food? That would be cheap.
